The executive director of the McKeesport-based Twin Rivers Council of Governments is one of eight officials statewide honored with a Governor's Award for Local Government Excellence.

The award for John Palyo was announced last week by Dennis Davin, acting secretary of the state Department of Community and Economic Development.

Eight communities, including Dormont, Tarentum, Heidelberg and Collier Twp. in Allegheny County, also were honored by the state.

"Today's events are a celebration of successful local government initiatives that have produced positive impacts within Pennsylvania's local communities," Davin said.

Twin Rivers COG provides cooperative purchasing agreements and other services to McKeesport and 13 other communities in Allegheny and Westmoreland counties. It is currently pursuing a merger with the Homestead-based Steel Valley COG.

Award recipients were honored April 15 in Harrisburg.
