Topic: Writing and learning about poetry and verse

Guest: Shara McCallum, Penn State University poet laureate

How Topic Discussed: Shara McCallum was born in Jamaica and came to the United States when she was 9, and has mixed Scottish and Caribbean heritage. Her new book is a novel written in verse form about the poet Robert Burns. McCallum is visiting Penn State's Commonwealth Campuses — including those in McKeesport, New Kensington and Uniontown — to meet with students and faculty. How did she become the Penn State poet laureate? What does she remember about growing up in Kingston? Why does Burns' life — and his decision to nearly become a slave overseer in Jamaica — resonate with her today? Why is poetry important and what do we learn from writing and reading verse?
