W.N. Church Plans Peach Festival Fundraiser

The West Newton First Church of God, 157 North Second St., will hold a Peach Festival fundraiser from 4 to 7 p.m. Aug. 31 at the Lions Club Field House on Pittsburgh Street, a spokesperson said. The fundraiser will feature homemade sandwiches, salads, peach desserts and drinks.

 


Barbershop Quartet Coming to West Newton

The Westmoreland Library Network, Westmoreland County Parks & Recreation and West Newton Public Library will host a concert by the barbershop quartet 3Rivers4 at noon on Aug. 31, a spokesperson said. Registration in advance is required because seating is limited.

The concert at the West Newton Senior Center will include lunch of turkey chef salad, vegetable soup, dessert and milk. Tickets to the show are free but lunch is a $2 donation for adults age 60 and over, and $3.97 for people under 60.

This free entertainment program is funded in part by a grant from Westmoreland County Parks & Recreation, the Westmoreland Library Network, and the West Newton Public Library. To register, call (724) 872-4976 before Aug. 23.

 


Moose, DWNI Plan Spaghetti Fundraisers

Downtown West Newton Inc. and Moose Lodge 31 will hold a spaghetti fundraiser at 5 to 7:30 p.m. July 15 at the lodge hall, 102 S. Water St., to raise money to pay for the new Christmas decorations.

Meals will include spaghetti, side salad, bread and homemade desserts for $12. Dinners will be held the third Saturday of each month until further notice, a spokesperson said. For more information or to pre-order tickets, call the Moose Lodge at (724) 872-7264 or DWNI at (724) 872-0100.

The grand opening for the West Newton Farm & Vendor Market Expo is from 2 to 7 p.m. May 13, a spokesman said.

Community Singers Plan Friday Performance

The West Newton Community Singers will present “When I Sing” at 7:30 p.m. Friday (May 5) at West Newton United Presbyterian Church, Third and Main streets, West Newton, a spokesman said. Rick Carson will serve as director and Lauren Cross as accompanist.

Tickets can be purchased in advance at Gary’s Chuck Wagon Restaurant, South Second Street, and are $7 for adults, or $8 at the door. Children’s tickets are $5.

 


West Newton Library to Host Jewelry, Book Sale

West Newton Public Library, 124 N. Water St, will hold a jewelry and book sale from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. May 6, a spokesperson said. Books will be sold for $5 per bag.

“Our storage building is full to bursting, so if you love to read, be sure to not miss this sale,” the spokesperson said.

In case of rain, the event will be moved to May 13. For more information, call (724) 633-0798.

In other West Newton Public Library news, there are 24 books from the “Antique Shop Mysteries” series available and in like-new condition that are now being sold in a silent auction. Interested parties should call the library before April 30 and leave their name, telephone number and bid. The winner will be contacted after April 30.

WN Church Plans Election Day Luncheon

West Newton First Church of God, 157 N. Second St., will hold an election day luncheon from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the day of the May 16 primary, a spokesperson said.

A spokesperson said “we urge you to go out and vote, then come and eat at our Election Day luncheon.” The menu will include soup, salads, sandwiches, desserts and beverages. For take out, call (724) 872-7467. Delivery will be available to local businesses in the West Newton area.

 


W.N. Church Slates April 19 Fundraiser

The West Newton Church of God will hold a fundraiser from 4 to 9 p.m. April 19 at the Country Custard Cottage & Gift Shop, 1503 Mars Hill Road, Sutersville, a spokesperson said. The church will receive a percentage of the proceeds whenever customers mention the “New Mexico Mission Trip Fundraiser.”

The spokesperson said the church is raising money for a Bible school trip to the Navajo nation.

 


W. Newton Churches Mark ‘Day of Prayer’

First Methodist Church, 106 N. Second St., West Newton, and First Church of God will host a celebration of the World Day of Prayer at 11 a.m. March 3 at the sanctuary of First Methodist, a spokesperson said. The event is sponsored by the women of both congregations.

This year, congregants will be asked to pray for Taiwan. A light luncheon will be served following the service.

 


Scholarship Fund Plans Spaghetti Dinner

The Grady Hoffman Memorial Scholarship Fund will hold a spaghetti dinner benefit from 1 to 6 p.m. Feb. 25 at the Hutchinson Volunteer Fire Dept. hall, 261 Firehall Road off Route 136 in Sewickley Twp., a spokesman said.

Dinners are $10 for adults and $5 for children and include spaghetti, bread, beverage, salad and dessert. There will be a 50/50 drawing and other raffles.

The scholarship fund distributed $9,000 in educational assistance last year, the spokesman said. Purchase tickets at the door and eat-in or take-out.
