W. Newton Churches Mark ‘Day of Prayer’

First Methodist Church, 106 N. Second St., West Newton, and First Church of God will host a celebration of the World Day of Prayer at 11 a.m. March 3 at the sanctuary of First Methodist, a spokesperson said. The event is sponsored by the women of both congregations.

This year, congregants will be asked to pray for Taiwan. A light luncheon will be served following the service.

 


Scholarship Fund Plans Spaghetti Dinner

The Grady Hoffman Memorial Scholarship Fund will hold a spaghetti dinner benefit from 1 to 6 p.m. Feb. 25 at the Hutchinson Volunteer Fire Dept. hall, 261 Firehall Road off Route 136 in Sewickley Twp., a spokesman said.

Dinners are $10 for adults and $5 for children and include spaghetti, bread, beverage, salad and dessert. There will be a 50/50 drawing and other raffles.

The scholarship fund distributed $9,000 in educational assistance last year, the spokesman said. Purchase tickets at the door and eat-in or take-out.

 


W.N. Library Accepting Book, Jewelry Donations

West Newton Public Library is accepting donations of gently used books and old jewelry for upcoming sales.

A spokesperson said that following the recent successful used book sale, the library needs to replenish its book sale room. The library is seeking newer adult fiction hardcover, paperback, biographies, non-fiction, children’s books, DVDs and audio tapes.

The library is not currently accepting used cookbooks, Bibles, encyclopedias or textbooks for resale.

W. Newton Library Holds Tea Party Sept. 25

West Newton Public Library’s annual “You, Me and A Cup of Tea” fundraiser will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. Sept. 25 at the Le Grande Ballroom, South Second Street, West Newton.

Tickets are $20 and are on sale now at Gary’s Chuckwagon Restaurant and at the library, 124 N. Water St.

Participants also can mail a check to West Newton Public Library, P.O. Box 221, West Newton, PA 15089. Please enclose a self-addressed, stamped envelope. Tickets are a limited supply. Call (724) 633-0798 for more information.

Vacation Bible School Scheduled

First Church of God, 157 N. Second St., will hold Vacation Bible School entitled “Food Truck Party” from June 12 to 16. Ages 3 through adult. Please register to attend by telephoning (724) 872-7467. All are welcome to attend Sunday morning worship at 10:30 a.m., including junior church for youth. The worship service is live streamed on Facebook each week.

W. Newton Library Hosts Summer Program

West Newton Public Library will hold its summer reading program from 10 to 11 a.m. June 15, 22 and 29 at the Lions Field Pavilion, 511 Pittsburgh St., a spokesperson said.

Each day there will be a snack, guest reader and a craft, rain or shine. The event is being coordinated by Lori Luppold. Parents or guardians must accompany smaller children.

W. Newton Church Schedules May Events

An election day luncheon and a strawberry festival are planned in May by the First Church of God, 157 North Second St., West Newton.

The luncheon will be held the day of the primary election, May 17, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The menu includes a sandwich (chicken salad, ham barbecue or hot dog with sauerkraut), soup (chili, broccoli and cheese or chicken noodle), a side of potato or macaroni salad, and pie or cake. The strawberry festival will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. May 26 at the Sewickley Grange hall on Route 136. The menu includes hot dogs with sauerkraut, sloppy joes, pulled pork, baked beans, macaroni and potato salad, and strawberry desserts. For take out on the day of the event, call (724) 875-7738.

 


Fish Fry Scheduled in West Newton

West Newton Lions, 511 Pittsburgh St., will be holding an Ash Wednesday Fish Fry fundraiser for take-out only, a spokesperson said.

Hours are 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. March 2. All sales are cash only. The menu includes deep-fried, breaded Alaskan cod dinner with two sides for $13, or a fish sandwich for $9. Sides include macaroni and cheese, haluski, potato soup or cole slaw. Homemade pierogis with slaw will be sold for $13.

The West Newton Library will hold its fifth annual basket auction fundraiser from 12 noon to 4 p.m. March 13 at the Turkeytown Volunteer Fire Dept. Hall, 90 Supervisors Drive, South Huntingdon Twp., a spokesperson said.

Doors open at 11 a.m. Tickets are $15 and include a light lunch and 25 general gift basket tickets. Tickets may be purchased at the library, 124 N. Water St.; at Gary’s Chuck Wagon Restaurant, South Second Street; or online at ticketleap.com. 

There will be games of chance, a Presidents Gift Basket Tier, 50/50 drawing, and additional activities. The fundraiser benefits the fully volunteer-run library.

W.N. Library Seeking Book Donations for Sale

West Newton Public Library, 124 North Water St., is seeking donations of used, newer hardcover and paperback books for its fill-a-bag sale.

Manager Robin Matty said all books are checked to make sure the library does not need them for its shelves first.

At this time, the library is not seeking cookbooks, children’s books or non-fiction books. Used books are sold for $5 per bag. Hours are 12 noon to 5 p.m. Mondays and Thursdays, 12 noon to 7 p.m. Wednesdays and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays. For more information, call (724) 633-0798.
