Fill-a-Bag Sale Planned at W.N. Library

West Newton Public Library will hold a “$5 fill-a-bag” sale from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 3 in the parking lot of the library, 124 N. Water St., a spokesperson said.

All attendees must wear face masks. The library will be selling cookbooks, children’s books, adult hardcover and paperback books, non-fiction, biographies, audio tapes and DVDs.

West Newton Library Reopens

The West Newton Public Library has finished its recent remodeling project and reopened, a spokesperson said.

Hours are 12 noon to 5 p.m. Mondays and Thursdays, 12 noon to 7 p.m. Wednesdays and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays. The library is located at 124 North Water St.

Books and other items that are not available in West Newton can be requested from the other facilities in the Westmoreland Library Network, the spokesperson said. Deliveries are made twice per week. Library cards are free but users must present a photo ID to sign up.

W. Newton Center Offering Limited Services

The manager of the senior citizen center in West Newton said the facility is closed to the public during the coronavirus pandemic, but is still offering assistance via email and telephone.

Paul A. Kurzdorfer III, manager of the West Newton Center for Active Adults, said there is no timetable for reopening, but that the facility will use guidance from the state health department and will send updates to WTAE-TV and other local media.

“Though the center will remain closed to the public for the foreseeable future, staffing is still available to answer phone calls and emails on Mondays and Thursdays from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m,” Kurzdorfer said. “The center continues to offer home-delivered meals to those participants enrolled with the county (on a limited delivery schedule), as well as lunch take-out at the center on Mondays and Thursdays (to be enjoyed in the comfort of your home).”

W.N. Lions Plan Take-Out Only Fish Fry

The West Newton Lions Club will hold a take-out only fish fry from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Good Friday, April 10.

A spokeswoman said the event will be cash-only and will be conducted at the Lions Field House, 511 Pittsburgh St.

Because of the coronavirus pandemic, customers may call ahead at (724) 972-3779 and drive around to the back of the building to pickup their orders from their car windows.

West Newton Center for Active Adults will hold a volunteer recognition event from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. April 7, a spokesperson said.

The event is designed to celebrate current volunteers and recruit new ones and will be held at the senior center, 103 E. Main St., and across the street at Simeral Square, corner of East Main Street and North Water Street in West Newton.

Events begin at 9:30 a.m. at the senior center with “What’s Cooking,” a class on cooking rotisserie chicken stir-fry led by Michelle Marker of Nutrition Inc.

Lunch, Show March 24 for WN Seniors

West Newton Center for Active Adults, 103 E. Main St., will hold its monthly lunch and show on March 24, a spokesperson said. The featured artist is Jessie Glover, who will feature tunes from the “Rat Pack” as well as classic rock and roll favorites. Tickets are $5, plus $2 for the cost of lunch. In addition, polka musician, bandleader and Peppermint Records artist Mikey Dee will return to the center for a show on March 30. To register or order lunch, call the center.

 


W. Newton Church Posts Activities

The First Church of God in West Newton wil sponsor a bus trip to PNC Park on June 6 when the Pittsburgh Pirates host the St. Louis Cardinals during a “Faith Day” event at the ballpark.

The price is $50 and includes a $10 voucher for concessions at the game. The bus departs the parking lot at West Newton Elementary School at 2 p.m. and the game begins at 4:05 p.m. For tickets, call Kathy at (724) 872-6047.

W. Newton Church Schedules Lasagna Dinner

The First Church of God in West Newton will host a lasagna dinner from 4 to 7 p.m. March 21 to raise money for a trip to Gamerco, N.M., a spokesman said.

The dinner will be at Gary’s Chuck Wagon Restaurant, 109 South Second St. Tickets are $12 and include lasagna, salad, dessert and a beverage. Meals may be taken out or eaten in.

The church also is planning a bus trip Sept. 28 and 29 to the Creation Museum in Petersburg, Ky., followed by a dinner cruise on the Ohio River and an overnight stay at the Holiday Inn in Covington, Ky.

Shirt Sale Benefits Family of Medic Killed in Crash

A Washington County business is selling T-shirts and sweatshirts to benefit the family of a paramedic who was killed while responding to a car accident on Interstate 70.

Sparkles By Shell, located on West Main Street in Monongahela, is selling the items in honor of Matt C. Smelser, 43, of Charleroi, a paramedic supervisor for Rostraver-West Newton Emergency Medical Service who was struck and killed Jan. 5 near the Smithton exit.

A 1995 graduate of Perryopolis High School, Smelser had been an emergency responder for 24 years and in addition to Rostraver-West Newton EMS, also worked for UPMC's Paramedic Response Unit. He is survived by his wife of 19 years, Lynn Lenzi Smelser, and their children Logan and Adriana.

W. Newton Lions Set Lenten Fish Fries

West Newton Lions Club will hold fish fries on Ash Wednesday, Feb. 26, and Good Friday, April 10, a spokeswoman said.

The location is the club's pavilion, 511 Pittsburgh St. Food will be served buffet style and attendees can choose their own fish, side dishes, soups or salads. Desserts and soft drinks also will be available.

Menu will include baked, unbreaded cod; breaded, deep-fried Alaskan pollock; and two sides, including macaroni and cheese, haluski, cole slaw or broccoli salad; plus bread and butter for $12.
