7th Ward Cleanup Scheduled Saturday

Neighborhood groups will combine efforts for a Seventh Ward cleanup day on Saturday (Nov. 6), a spokesperson said.

The event begins at 10 a.m. at 1604 Evans Ave., near the McKeesport Ambulance Rescue Service station, and is sponsored by the McKeesport chapter of the NAACP, the Community Partnership for HIV Prevention and McKeesport Mayor Michael Cherepko.

Cherepko said the city will provide gloves and trash bags and volunteers will work their way through the neighborhood toward McKeesport Little Theater at Coursin and Bailie avenues. Lunch will be served at the end of the day.

Republicans Sweep White Oak Council Races

Republicans swept four vacant seats on White Oak borough council in Tuesday's election.

According to complete but unofficial results from the Allegheny County elections office, Loree Scharritter led the field with 1,188 votes, followed by incumbent Julie A. Opferman and newcomers Joelle M. Harbert and Jason Russell.

Former White Oak councilman David J. Pasternak came in fifth place; followed by Kenneth Robb and George Dillinger, who lost their bids for re-election; and Kenneth A. Obusek.

Pasternak, Robb, Dillinger and Obusek are Democrats.

Light-Up Night in West Newton is Nov. 27

Downtown West Newton Inc. will hold its annual “Miracle on Main Street” light-up night on Nov. 27.

Aaron Nelson, chair of DWNI, said this year’s theme is “A Charlie Brown Christmas.” The event begins at 3 p.m. and ends at 8:30 p.m., with a parade on Main Street to beginning at 5:15 p.m.

The community Christmas tree will be lighted directly following the parade.

Carnegie Library Posts November Events

Health screenings and technology programs for kids are part of November’s offerings at the Carnegie Library of McKeesport, said Vincent D’Alesio, library director.

“Thank you to everyone who attended the outstanding events during the busy month of October,” D’Alesio said. “You can see pictures of all the fun we had on our Facebook page.”

The library will be participating in the city’s Salute to Santa Parade on Nov. 20 with a “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” themed float, he said. Nelson’s Transmission Shop in Christy Park has been helping with the preparation of the float, D’Alesio said.

Poll Workers Needed in NV Twp.

There is a shortage of poll workers in North Versailles Twp. for the Nov. 2 election, township Commissioner Allen Wagner announced.

The shift is from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. and the pay is $150 for the day. If you are interested in working at the polls, fill out the form at vote.pa.gov/GetInvolved or call Allegheny County Elections Divisions Manager Dave Voye at (412) 350-4500.

 

County Exec, Bishop Visit Auberle Next Week

McKeesport-based Auberle will dedicate its newest family emergency shelter during its annual meeting on Wednesday.

Allegheny County Executive Rich Fitzgerald and the Most Rev. David Zubik, Roman Catholic bishop of Pittsburgh, will join Auberle board members at the campus, located on Hartman Street, for the dedication during the organization’s annual public meeting.

Fitzgerald and Zubik are both expected to make brief remarks during the event at 2:30 p.m.

Penn State Poet to Visit McKeesport Campus

Penn State University’s poet laureate will visit the Greater Allegheny Campus in McKeesport to read from her works on Monday, a spokeswoman announced.

Shara McCallum, 2021-22 Penn State Laureate and Edwin Erle Sparks Professor of English, will speak at 12:15 p.m. Nov. 1 in the Ostermayer Room of the Student Community Center. The event is free and open to the public.

Originally from Jamaica, McCallum is a poet who has authored six books and has had poems and essays published in journals, anthologies, and textbooks throughout the United States, the Caribbean, Latin America, Europe and Israel.

W.O. Sets Halloween Events

The White Oak Parks and Recreation Committee announced that the Halloween Parade and Truck-and-Treat event will be held 12 noon until 3 p.m. Oct. 30 at Sampson’s Mills Presbyterian Church. The parade line up will begin at 11:30 a.m.

“The borough will also host a Halloween decorating contest. Interested residents should email their name, contact information and pictures to Michelle (Gessner) at the borough,” said Councilwoman Julie Opferman.

Trick-or-treat hours in White Oak are designated for 6 to 8 p.m. Oct. 31.

 

Penn State’s Free Store Reopens for Fall

Penn State Greater Allegheny will reopen its Free Store 15132 this week, a spokeswoman said.

The store is located on the lower level of the Frable Building on the McKeesport campus.

A “free store” redistributes unwanted items in good condition to people that need them. The Free Store 15132 was originally opened in 2017 as part of Penn State Greater Allegheny’s Sustainability Signature Program. Available items may have ended up in landfills, but now have a new purpose for those with a need.

The concept was invented in San Francisco in the 1960s but was repopularlized locally by Giselle Fetterman, wife of then-Braddock mayor, now lieutentant governor, John Fetterman.

Jerome Bridge Closure Planned Thursday AM

The Jerome Avenue Bridge will be closed to all traffic early Thursday morning so that construction work can continue, the state Department of Transportation announced.

The eastbound lane, from 10th Ward to Downtown McKeesport, will be closed to traffic between 2 and 5 a.m. Thursday (Oct. 21), weather-permitting, so that crews can place parts of the bridge deck.

The eastbound lane also was closed Sunday for bridge deck replacement work Co. is the prime contractor.
