. . .

The coming months will note a unique anniversary for two life members of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 914 Intrepid West Mifflin. The former warriors are marking 25 years since their service during Operation Desert Storm.

Rami Nassar and Ken Curcio, both of West Mifflin, served in Saudi Arabia during the first Persian Gulf War two-and a-half decades ago. And although much of the world seemingly remembers the conflict as a sanitized news blip on television, the military experiences of both these men have impacted them for the rest of their lives.

Mifflin Road Re-Opens Tuesday

August 21, 2015 |

By Submitted Report | Posted in: McKeesport and Region News

A section of a busy commuter route between McKeesport and Pittsburgh that has been closed for more than a month will re-open to traffic on Tuesday (Aug. 25).

Mifflin Road, which also carries a portion of state Route 885, will reopen to bi-directional traffic at 6 a.m., said a district spokesman for state Department of Transportation.

The road was closed July 6 between Doerrville Avenue and Lebanon Road as crews replaced a culvert and rebuilt the roadway as part of a larger construction project to improve drainage and traffic conditions in the area.

PennDOT said short-term, intermittent stoppages will occur through Sept. 7 as crews continue construction activities, including curb and sidewalk construction and traffic signal improvements.

The Mifflin Road improvements are included in an $11 million project to improve the interchanges around the Glenwood Bridge. Golden Triangle Construction is the prime contractor.

Village Broadcast Rolls On, With Hiccups

August 12, 2015 |

By Jason Togyer | Posted in: Announcements

Day 1 of our broadcast of International Village rolled on schedule Monday, with a few minor glitches.

Every year, our problem is getting and holding onto a reliable Internet connection, which is not easy to do from a public park, especially with a $500 budget. We've tried to get major wireless and Internet providers to sponsor us, without success, so we have to pay for our own connection.

If you missed any of the broadcast --- or you were at International Village and want to see yourself on "TV," you can go to this page and look through yesterday's videos.

And be sure to listen to Braddock's WZUM (1550) between 4 and 8 p.m. for occasional updates from the Village.

I'd also be remiss if I didn't mention our sponsors:

Additional support has been provided by generous donations from Karen Hammer, Andrea Luketic, Matthew Boyko, Annette James, Timothy Roolf, Robert Swartz, Jane Togyer and Jeffrey Tomovcsik.

Mosquito Spraying Tomorrow in Munhall, Homestead

August 04, 2015 |

By Submitted Report | Posted in: Announcements

Allegheny County Health Department will be spraying parts of Munhall and Homestead for mosquitoes on Wednesday night, a spokeswoman said.

Recent samples of mosquitoes taken from the boroughs have tested positive for West Nile virus. The ACHD will treat those neighborhoods using a truck-mounted, "ultra low volume" sprayer between 8 and 10 p.m. Aug. 5.

The treatment is intended to decrease the mosquito population and minimize the risk of transmission of the virus. West Nile virus can make some people severely ill and in rare cases causes severe neurological illnesses.

There have been no human cases of West Nile virus reported in Allegheny County so far this year, the health department said.

Spraying will be targeted between East 10th and East 16th Avenues as well as neighborhoods adjacent to  Homestead Cemetery. In the event of rain, the treatment will take place the following day, on August 6, during the same hours.
