North Versailles Twp. commissioners have tentatively approved a 2021 budget with no tax increase.
At its November meeting, the board of commissioners adopted a $8.06 million spending plan, which includes $7.56 million in the general fund, $304,603 in the liquid fuels fund and $205,010 in the fire tax fund.
Commissioners also fixed the property tax rate for 2021 at the current 7.25 mills.
The budget will be on display in the manager’s office in the township building, 1401 Greensburg Pike, during regular business hours until the next regular meeting on Dec. 17, when commissioners will vote to officially adopt the budget.

North Versailles Twp. officials are going to try to reduce wear-and-tear on several roads by establishing weight limits.
At their November meeting, commissioners approved an ordinance establishing limits on 12 township roads after officials determined they were being damaged due to the excessive weight of large vehicles traveling on them.
Vehicles exempted from the weight limits include emergency vehicles, school buses, vehicles making local deliveries or pick-ups and garbage trucks.

East Allegheny School District was set to begin a new hybrid learning model on Dec. 7, but a surge in Covid-19 cases in Allegheny County and a new order from the Pennsylvania Department of Health, put that plan on hold.
At a special meeting held Nov. 23, the board voted to go completely remote until possibly Jan. 19.
The district was operating within a scaffolded learning model that allowed students with individualized education plans to attend classes in-person.
Allegheny is one of the counties in the state now considered an area of substantial transmission. The recent order from the Pennsylvania Department of Health recommends schools in those counties either go completely remote or commit to even stricter in-person mask guidelines.

East Allegheny School District collaborated with numerous community organizations to provide food, flu shots, clothing and school supplies to hundreds of local families at a Gobble Giving event held at the junior-senior high school on Monday.
Organizations on hand included the Allegheny County Health Department, Communities in Schools, Ma’s Pantry, Duquesne University School of Pharmacy, Turtle Creek Community Services, Auberle, and Nutrition Inc. Seventy percent of students that attend East Allegheny schools qualify for free or reduced lunches.
“There is a high level of food insecurity in the Mon Valley,” says Melanie Readal, public health administrator for the Allegheny County Health Department, “that's why a lot of times when we do events where we do work with our community partners and municipalities that we encourage food distribution just to make sure that we're decreasing the stigma around food insecurity.”

East Allegheny School Board will delay the district's transition from remote to hybrid learning until Dec. 7.
Superintendent Alan Johnson recommended the extension in light of the current spike in COVID-19 cases in Allegheny County and to allow for “quarantine time” between the Thanksgiving holiday and the school reopening in the middle of the second nine weeks.
EA’s first nine-week grading period came to a close on Oct. 28.
Allegheny County remains in the moderate range, less than 100 cases per 100,000 residents, which allows for either hybrid or remote learning.

With Halloween on Saturday, you’ve hopefully already made a plan for a costume. But have you considered the safest way to trick-or-treat this year?
Most local communities — McKeesport, North Versailles Twp., White Oak, Port Vue, and Liberty Borough — will observe Halloween with trick-or-treating during the hours of 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday.
Duquesne will observe trick-or-treating from 5 to 7 p.m. and will have a costume contest, with “grab-and-go” treats, from 4 to 5 p.m. at Memorial Park on Grant Avenue. To comply with COVID-19 safety recommendations, participants should enter via South Second Street and exit via South Third Street. The event is made possible by city officials, Duquesne PRIDE and the Duquesne PartnerSHIP.
Dravosburg will observe trick-or-treating from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Saturday, with a Halloween costume parade at the borough’s ballfields at 4:30 p.m. Social distancing rules will be in place and attendees are asked to wear face masks.
Prizes will be given to the prettiest costume, ugliest/scariest costume and most original costume. Children ages 0 to 13 are allowed to participate.

There will be a prescription drug take-back day from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday (Oct. 24) at the North Versailles Twp. police station, 1401 Greensburg Ave., officials said.
In addition, a township-wide clean-up will be held from 9 a.m. to 12 noon Oct. 24. Anyone who would like to participate is asked to meet at the township building.

Upcoming events and news of several new businesses topped the agenda at this month’s meeting of the North Versailles Twp. commissioners.
Commissioner Allen Wagner said there will be an open house at 3:30 p.m. Oct. 25 for Walkers Pet HoTail’s new location at 1751 Lincoln Highway.
In addition, a slag reclamation plant is being developed near the George Westinghouse Bridge and has received all of the necessary permits. The business will take slag and convert it into road construction material that can be used in concrete and asphalt, officials said.

East Allegheny School District will hold a virtual town hall meeting at 6 p.m. Tuesday to discuss plans to move to a mix of in-person and online education.
At the board’s Oct. 12 meeting, school directors said the town hall will break down the proposed plan and allow time for questions and discussion.
Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the district began the school year with most students taking classes remotely, except for those who required face-to-face instruction due to special learning needs.

A program that prepares local high school seniors for college and the workforce is having trouble recruiting due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Emerging Leaders Program, run by the Human Services Center Corp. in Turtle Creek, still has nearly 40 spots available for seniors attending East Allegheny, McKeesport Area, Penn Hills, West Mifflin Area and Woodland Hills high schools, said Leah O’Reilly, director of programs at HSCC.
“One of the complications that we are having with the pandemic is recruitment,” she said. “Normally we have staff on-site in each one of the school districts so they are able to see the students every day and identify potential candidates.”
That hasn’t been possible this year due to the pandemic, O’Reilly said.
