Mon Yough Chorale Sets Holiday Performances

The Mon Yough Chorale will be presenting its annual Christmas concert, “Songs of the Season,” at 3 p.m. Dec. 18 at Sampson’s Mills Presbyterian Church, 1665 Lincoln Way, White Oak, president Donna Dineen announced. 

Admission is free but a goodwill offering will be accepted. All monies collected will help defray the cost of hosting the state-wide competition, Saengerfest, in June 2023, which we will be hosted by the local group.

In addition, the chorale is performing at 3 p.m. Sunday (Dec. 4) at Carnegie Library of McKeesport, 1507 Library Ave., in a concert sponsored by the library and the McKeesport Music Club. Light refreshments will be served. For more information, visit the library’s website.

 

Kennywood Blvd. Delays Possible Next Week

Delays are possible next week on Kennywood Boulevard while crews inspect the bridge that crosses the Union Railroad yard, a spokesman for the state Department of Transportation said.

Single-lane restrictions will occur in both directions on the Route 837 bridge over the Union Railroad tracks between Overland Avenue and North Second Street from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Dec. 5-8, weather permitting, said Steve Cowan, PennDOT spokesman.

Crews from The Markosky Engineering Group, Inc. and the Sofis Rigging Co. will conduct the inspection work. Motorists should be prepared for changing traffic patterns.

 

AIU Sets Career Fair for Dec. 7

Local residents interested in careers as special education teachers, paraprofessionals, physical and speech therapists and in other positions are invited to a career fair on Wednesday in Homestead.

Allegheny Intermediate Unit will hold a Special Education Career Fair at its headquarters, 475 East Waterfront Drive, from 4 to 7 p.m. Dec. 7.

To register, email recruitment@aiu3.net, but a spokeswoman said walk-ins will be welcome.

The AIU operates three schools for children with multiple and complex needs that foster the growth of academic, social and employment skills needed for independence. It also provides a variety of special education supports and services to students throughout Allegheny County.

North Versailles Twp. will hold a Christmas party for children from 1 to 3 p.m. Dec. 10, said township Commissioner Tracy Yusko.

10th Ward Ramp Closed for Paving

Ramp No. 1 into the city’s 10th Ward will remain closed through Nov. 11 so that crews can pave the surface and perform other repairs.

A district spokesman for the state Department of Transportation said crews from Joseph B. Fay Co. will conduct milling operations where the ramp meets the Jerome Avenue Bridge, conduct concrete repairs, and pave the road.

Ramp No. 1 connects West Fifth Avenue and the Jerome Avenue Bridge to River Road and the lower half of Rebecca Street. Traffic is being detoured around-the-clock while the ramp work occurs.

Communities Post Halloween Events, Times

Mon-Yough area communities have slated times for trick-or-treat and other Halloween activities.

The City of McKeesport will hold trick-or-treat hours from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday (Oct. 31), along with Liberty Borough, North Versailles Twp., Port Vue, Versailles, West Mifflin and White Oak.

Trick-or-treat hours in Dravosburg are 6 to 7:30 p.m.

In the City of Pittsburgh, trick-or-treat will be celebrated from 5 to 7 p.m. for those who participate.

Duquesne will not have door-to-door trick-or-treating. Instead, Duquesne’s Halloween festivities will take place at Memorial Park from 3 to 7 p.m. Oct. 31, Mayor Scott Adams said. In case of inclement weather, activities will be moved to the police garage.

NAMI McKeesport Sets November Meeting

The McKeesport chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness, will meet at 6 p.m. Nov. 2 in Room F122, Frable Building, Penn State Greater Allegheny, a spokeswoman said.

The meeting is open to families and friends of loved ones living with mental illness.

A special presentation via Zoom will be given by financial advisor Brian Kelnhofer of 1847 Financial in Conshohocken.

Kelnhofer will provide an overview of government benefit programs as well as strategies for protecting and maximizing eligibility for certain government benefits, the spokeswoman said.

Nominations Being Accepted for Tube City Board

Tube City Community Media Inc., the non-profit publisher of The Tube City Almanac and operator of Tube City Online Radio, is accepting nominations from people interested in serving on its board of directors for 2022-23.

Nominations will be considered at the board's next meeting, scheduled for Oct. 30, and should be received by Oct. 23.

Nominees should be at least 18 years old, be able to pass a background check, and live within a nine-mile radius of McKeesport. Most importantly, they should have a sincere interest in local, non-profit media and in promoting the McKeesport area via the Internet, radio and other means.

Angora Gardens Posts October Calendar

Thursday yoga classes with Alice Kemp will be returning to Angora Gardens in White Oak this winter, and wreath and crochet classes will resume in November, a spokeswoman has announced.

The health and wellness center, operated by UPMC Western Behavioral Health at Mon Yough, has released its October schedule, and also is seeking volunteers.

“Volunteering at Angora Gardens is an extremely rewarding experience that provides a valuable service for our community,” says Julie Pecora, program supervisor. “We offer volunteer activities for adults and youth.”

Individuals, families, scout and church groups, schools, corporate teams and others seeking community service hours are encouraged to participate.

The facility is located at 3 Muse Lane in White Oak Park.

Library Hosts Lunch, Local Poet on Friday

Carnegie Library of McKeesport will host a “lunch on the lawn” Friday as part of its continuing celebration of “Love Your Library Month,” then will welcome local poet Kristofer Collins, who will read some of his work.

A spokesperson said the Sept. 16 lunch begins at 11 a.m. and will feature quiche, salad and a beverage. Funnel cakes also will be available for an additional $5. Events will be held outside, weather-permitting.

At 2 p.m., Collins will read from his work. He is the editor of the Pittsburgh Book Review, books editor at Pittsburgh Magazine, a contributor to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette and co-host of the Summer Poetry Series at Hemingway’s in Oakland.
