NAMI McKeesport Plans February Meeting

The McKeesport chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness will meet at 6 p.m. Feb. 1 in Room 122 of the Frable Building at Penn State Greater Allegheny, a spokeswoman said. The meeting is open to families and friends of loved ones living with mental illness.

Updates regarding NAMI programs and other resources will be available. A care and share session will be held.

NAMI is the nation’s largest grassroots mental health organization dedicated to building better lives for the millions of Americans affected by mental illness.

Scholarship Fund Plans Spaghetti Dinner

The Grady Hoffman Memorial Scholarship Fund will hold a spaghetti dinner benefit from 1 to 6 p.m. Feb. 25 at the Hutchinson Volunteer Fire Dept. hall, 261 Firehall Road off Route 136 in Sewickley Twp., a spokesman said.

Dinners are $10 for adults and $5 for children and include spaghetti, bread, beverage, salad and dessert. There will be a 50/50 drawing and other raffles.

The scholarship fund distributed $9,000 in educational assistance last year, the spokesman said. Purchase tickets at the door and eat-in or take-out.

 

Wilmerding Community Center Slates Craft Show

The Wilmerding Community Center, previously the YMCA, is having a craft show from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Feb. 5.

The craft show will feature crafters and vendors with woodwork, quilted items, jewelry, bath and body products, fragrances, baked goods and more.

City Library Posts Upcoming Events

Carnegie Library of McKeesport will host a family-game night at 5 p.m. Saturday in the children’s room, 1507 Library Ave., a spokesman said.

Library Director Vincent D’Alesio said staff will host parents and kids in a game of “Apples to Apples Jr.,” a vocabulary-building game of funny word combinations.

The game is intended for players ages 8 and up. Registration in advance is requested, because space is limited. Call (412) 672-0625.

In other events for the second half of January, visitors are invited to take a “shelfie” — that’s a self-portrait in the shelves — on Jan. 25 during library business hours. Walnut Street Work Begins Monday

Traffic will be restricted on Walnut Street beginning Monday morning so that crews can install new sewer lines, a district spokesman for the state Department of Transportation said.

Lane restrictions will be in place from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. between 11th and 12th avenues, weather-permitting, continuing through late February, PennDOT spokesman Steve Cowan said.

Crews from Wilson Excavating will conduct sewer installation work.

PennDOT is not involved in this work and is providing this information as a public service announcement only, Cowan said.

 

Chorale Seeks Members, First Meeting Jan. 22

The Mon Yough Chorale, a community chorus, will begin rehearsals for its Spring session at 7 p.m. Jan. 22, a spokeswoman said. 

Rehearsals are held at Sampson's Mills Presbyterian Church, 1665 Lincoln Way, White Oak. Chorale president Donna Dineen said all sections are open, with a great need of tenors and basses.

“If you’ve sung in your high school, college or church choir in the past and are looking to get back to singing, this is a great opportunity,” she said. “There are no auditions. Winners of NV Twp. Holiday Contest Announced

North Versailles Twp. has announced winners of the holiday light contest for 2022.

Township Commissioner Tracy Yusko said this year’s winners are:

• Thomas residence at 785 Angeline Dr. won Best Children’s Theme.

• Procacina residence at 206 Taylor St. won the Traditionally Elegant category.

• Clark Griswold award went to the Nichol residence at 302 Lincoln Ave.

Each of those homes won a $50 gift card for Home Depot.

The Connelly residence at 515 Cedarhurst Dr. won the Best Overall category and was awarded a $100 gift card for Home Depot.

 

Test Program Offers Discounted Transit Fares

Applications are now being accepted for a pilot program that will provide discounted transit fares for Allegheny County residents on low and fixed incomes.

The discount program is being managed by the county’s Department of Human Services and is limited to people ages 18 to 64 who received benefits through the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP, as of Sept. 30.

Participation is voluntary. Participants will randomly be enrolled in one of three programs and will receive either unlimited free fares on all PRT trips for 12 months; a 50 percent discount for 12 months; or a ConnectCard pre-loaded with $10 in free transportation.

Angora Gardens Sets Dec. 16 Open House

Angora Gardens will host a holiday open house from 5 to 8 p.m. Dec. 16 featuring photos with Santa, vendors, a miniature village, entertainment and crafts for children, a spokeswoman said.

Donations of gift cards and new holiday-themed items also are being accepted through Dec. 9 for the Mistletoe Magic Mega Auction Basket raffle, said Julie Pecora, program supervisor.

“Come make a memory at Angora Gardens!” she said. “We’re looking forward to welcoming you back to our Holiday Open House! ​Our community events are open to everyone and feature unique activities and entertainment for all ages.”
