Lent marks the 40 days observed by Christians as a time of fasting, penance and prayer before Easter Sunday.
Traditionally, Catholics have given up eating red meat on Fridays during Lent as a form of sacrifice, and Catholic churches, volunteer fire departments and other organizations have held fish fries.
As a result, Lenten fish fries have always been a big deal in parts of the country with a large Roman Catholic population, including Western Pennsylvania.
But over the past 10 years, fish fries have become a major feature of Pittsburgh area culture, embracing not just Catholics, but Christians and non-Christians alike. Websites have sprung up to review and rank local fish fries, and some churches and civic organizations have added other ethnic foods to make their particular fish fries stand out.
With Easter Sunday upon us, Friday marked the last Lenten fish fries for 2019. Photographer Vickie Babyak stopped at some local fish fries in the Mon-Yough area to grab a few last scenes (and fish sandwiches).

Carnegie Library of McKeesport has scheduled a full slate of events during National Library Week. All events are free and open to the public.
At 10 a.m. Tuesday, the library's main branch, 1507 Library Ave., will screen the 2018 feature film "On the Basis of Sex," a biographical drama starring Felicity Jones as a young Ruth Bader Ginsburg arguing the early cases of her career as a lawyer.
The movie also stars Armie Hammer, Justin Theroux, Jack Reynor, Cailee Spaeny, Sam Waterston and Kathy Bates.

White Oak Mayor Ina Jean Marton praised the borough's emergency responders for their handling of a Jan. 2 incident.
At council's March meeting, Marton thanked White Oak Police Sgt. Dan Opferman and Officer Greg Smith, the McKeesport Police Department, Allegheny County police SWAT and their negotiator, and White Oak EMS's WOTAC team for working together to negotiate with an armed, suicidal man barricaded in a home in the borough.

The bathhouse and pool roof replacement project at Heritage Hill Pool has been completed, White Oak Borough Engineer Ken Hillman reported at the March 18 council meeting.
As expected, the project is finished in time for the pool's 2019 season.
Hillman’s report included a recommendation for council to authorize payments in the amount of $31,808.70 and $14,131.90 to Tennis Roofing, Inc. for completion of the project. Council approved the recommendation.
“This is the first roof replacement purchased,” Councilman George Dillinger said. “The original one on the building was from 1975. Things have to be repaired and (kept up).”

DJs Candy and Mike will spin the tunes on March 30 and April 27 when American Legion Gen. Smedley D. Butler Post 701 in White Oak holds its next oldies dances.
Doors open at 7 p.m. and music continues until 11 p.m., a spokesman said. Admission is $5 and all proceeds benefit veterans' programs.
The legion is located at 2813 Capital St. For more information, call (724) 984-6611.

Alazae, a 17-year-old pit mix who is currently residing at the White Oak Animal Safe Haven, Inc. was in attendance last week when the shelter was awarded a generous donation of over $28,000 from #1 Cochran Toyota in North Huntingdon.
“We are so thankful for the generous donation,” said White Oak Mayor Ina Jean Marton, who founded the no-kill shelter in September 2003. “This money will allow us to continue with our efforts in finding loving homes for many stray, surrendered or abandoned animals.”
More than 13,000 cats and dogs have been saved through adoptions and foster programs at the shelter since its inception.

White Oak Zoning Hearing Board will meet at 7:30 p.m. March 7 to consider a request for a variance at 2908 McClintock Road.
Councilman Ed Babyak said the property owner wants to construct a five-foot fence to partially enclose their property.
Borough council will hold workshop meetings at 6:45 p.m. March 11 and 18. The March 18 workshop will be followed by the regularly scheduled council meeting at 8 p.m. Those meetings are open to the public.
The next meeting for members of the Active Shooter/Hostile Event working group will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. March 20, Councilman Ken Robb said.

Two homes slated for demolition by White Oak Borough have been granted temporary reprieves as their owners make improvements.
At a public hearing before February's council meeting, owners of properties at 1828 California Ave. and 608 Osborne St. were granted additional extensions to obtain their occupancy permits.
The extensions came at the recommendation of at the recommendation of borough Code Enforcement Officer Brian Dinkfelt, who said that each of those properties have been considerably improved since being recommended for demolition in August.

White Oak council has given its approval for the transfer of a vacant house on Ohio Avenue to the Tri-COG Land Bank.
The one-story home at 1808 Ohio will only be transferred if McKeesport Area School District and Allegheny County consent, said Dave Pasternak, White Oak council president.
Pasternak said he's hopeful that the transfer, if approved, will result in the house being refurbished and sold to a new owner. According to county tax records, the house has been tax-delinquent for several years.
