At White Oak Council's meeting this week, Karen Slobodian (above) accepted a plaque from Mayor Ina Jean Marton for her 17 years of service on the White Oak Recreation Board. The chair of the organization for the past three years, Slobodian is stepping down but said she still hopes to assist the board with some of their activities.
Also recognized by council for their service as members of the Recreation Board were Andy Macey, Art Maksin, Tom Miller, Lois Paige, George Pambacas and Lisa Pitchford.

Mon Yough Chorale will hold an open house for prospective members from 7 to 9 p.m. Jan. 21 at Sampson's Mills Presbyterian Church, 1665 Lincoln Way, White Oak, a spokeswoman said.
Anyone who enjoys choral singing is invited to attend, including former and current high school and college choir or chorus members, church choir members who want to branch out in the type of music they sing, and former and current music teachers, she said.

White Oak council has passed the borough's 2018 budget with no tax increase --- but with the caveat that it may re-open the spending plan next month.
And they did so without Council President Ron Massung, who resigned from borough council after 26 years.
At a special meeting Thursday, council voted 6-0 to accept the $5.4 million budget, which fixes real estate taxes at 6.66 mills. Borough Manager John Palyo said the total spending plan is roughly the same as the 2017 budget.
But, Palyo said, with new council members being seated on Jan. 2, they may exercise their prerogative to re-open the budget. Under the state's borough code, they would have until Feb. 15 to do so.
"Being a reorganization year, the new council is going to want to look at everything that has been proposed," Palyo said.

Two people are dead following a house fire in the 3000 block of State Street in White Oak.
Matt Brown, chief of emergency services for Allegheny County, said the fire was reported at 3:44 a.m. Thursday. Upon arrival less than five minutes later, White Oak police and firefighters found the house fully engulfed by flame, Brown said.
Firefighters entered the house and found two people dead on the first floor, Brown said. Their names have not yet been released pending notification of next of kin, he said.

The Mon Yough Chorale will bring Christmas music to the area with two concerts in December.
A spokeswoman said the chorale will perform with the East Winds Symphonic Band at St. Angela Merici Church, 1698 Fawcett Ave., White Oak at 3:30 p.m. Dec. 10. A cookie reception will follow. Admission is free.
On Dec. 17, the chorale will perform again with an afternoon of song at Sampson's Mills Presbyterian Church, 1665 Lincoln Way, White Oak. Tickets are $7 and will be sold at the door. A cookie reception will follow.

Nancy Greenland will retire as White Oak's secretary and open records officer after 46 years of service to the borough.
At this month's council meeting, Mayor Ina Jean Marton recognized Greenland for her dedication to the residents of White Oak Borough. Greenland will retire at the end of the month.
“I’ve really enjoyed working with the elected officials, both past and present, and I hope that in the future everyone continues to work together to keep White Oak a great community and keeps us growing,” Greenland said.
In other business, Councilman David Pasternak reported that a committee of council members are working on rental and usage agreements and fees for the White Oak Community Center, which is expected to open soon.

As cold weather returns to Western Pennsylvania, White Oak officials are reminding residents of their responsibility to keep any public sidewalks adjoining their property clear of snow and ice.
At Monday's council meeting, borough solicitor Krisha DiMascio said a letter about snow removal will be sent to residents and property owners soon.
Many sections of Lincoln Way didn't have sidewalks until the road was widened and reconstructed by the state Department of Transportation.
Under borough ordinance and an agreement with PennDOT, White Oak owns the sidewalks, but owners of adjoining properties need to remove snow and ice from them, DiMascio said.

A new store opened on the McKeesport-White Oak border last week and attracted nearly 40 customers on its first day. And yet it didn't bring in a dime in sales.
Of course, it wasn't supposed to.
The new "Free Store" on the campus of Penn State Greater Allegheny is an outgrowth of the five-year-old Free Store 15104 in Braddock, which takes surplus and donated items and redistributes them to people in need. In 2015, a similar "Free Store" opened in Wilkinsburg.
The Greater Allegheny store, located at the rear of the Frable Building, is totally student-run and is the first on a college campus, says Erin O'Malley, interim director of student affairs.
O'Malley is from North Braddock and is involved with Braddock's Partnership for a Better Community, so she's seen that borough's Free Store up-close and personal.
Shortly after new Chancellor Jacqueline Edmondson arrived in McKeesport, O'Malley introduced her to Giselle Fetterman, founder of the Free Store 15104.
