Members of the McKeesport Lions Club unveiled their new drinking fountain at the Lions Bandshell in Renziehausen Park just in time for the Summer Concert Series to begin on Sunday (June 18).
Performing this Sunday are The Skyliners, while next week’s concert (June 25) features the ABBA tribute band Dancing Queen.
Upcoming weeks include Chuck Blasko’s Vogues (July 4, followed by fireworks), Creedence Clearwater Revival tribute band Pendulum (July 9), and Jeff Jimerson and Airborne (July 16).
All performances begin at 7 p.m. A full schedule is available at www.mckeesportbands.com.
Concerts continue through Labor Day weekend. Support is provided by the Allegheny Regional Asset District, the McKeesport Lions Club and the City of McKeesport.

National Alliance on Mental Illness McKeesport support group will meet at 6 p.m. June 7 at Penn State Greater Allegheny in Frable Building Room 122, a spokeswoman said. The meeting is open to families and friends of loved ones living with mental illness.
Through a “care and share” session members offer understanding and support unique to those who are affected by these conditions. NAMI McKeesport occasionally invites mental health professionals to speak about treatment and resources.

Allegheny County Economic Development is currently accepting applications for the 2023 round of the Blight Removal Program, a spokeswoman said.
Municipalities, public authorities, councils of government, land banks and private developers may apply for funding to remediate established blight conditions. Applications are due by 4:30 p.m. June 16 and individual awards of up to $250,000 are available.
Approximately $1.5 million is available during this round of funding, county officials said.

Minimally invasive surgical techniques have the potential to reduce recovery time and pain for people suffering from hernias.
Dr. Steven Ballesteros, a general surgeon at UPMC McKeesport hospital and UPMC East, will discuss the diagnosis and treatment of hernias using robotic-assisted technology during a free talk at 12 noon May 30. The discussion will be held online, a spokeswoman said.

Volunteers are needed this Saturday to help place American flags on veterans’ graves in McKeesport & Versailles Cemetery, a spokeswoman said. Please meet at the cannon near the mausoleum in the veterans’ section of the cemetery at 9 a.m. and bring a hammer with you, she said.

Two weeks ago, Tube City Almanac mailed questionnaires to all 13 candidates running for McKeesport Area School Board. The questionnaires include 10 questions that were created by Almanac editor Jason Togyer and freelance writer Adam Reinherz with help from several non-profit associations for school board members.
Over the weekend, we sent a reminder to anyone who had not yet responded. Both the questionnaire and the reminders were sent to the addresses candidates listed on their nominating papers.
One candidate just called to ask if the questionnaire was a “scam.” It’s not a scam, it’s an honest attempt to get every candidate’s opinions to questions such as, “Why did you decide to run for school board?”

Students from the Founders’ Hall Drama Club will present “Disney’s Beauty and the Beast, Jr.” at 7 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday (May 4 to 6) in the auditorium at Francis McClure Elementary School, 500 Longvue Drive, White Oak.
Last week, cast members previewed songs for members of the McKeesport Area School Board.
The box office opens at 6 p.m. each night of the show. The producer/director is Edward Moore, choreographer is Cassie Fedor, musical director is Drew DeCarlo and technical designer is Nathan Cross.

The West Newton Community Singers will present “When I Sing” at 7:30 p.m. Friday (May 5) at West Newton United Presbyterian Church, Third and Main streets, West Newton, a spokesman said. Rick Carson will serve as director and Lauren Cross as accompanist.
Tickets can be purchased in advance at Gary’s Chuck Wagon Restaurant, South Second Street, and are $7 for adults, or $8 at the door. Children’s tickets are $5.

West Newton First Church of God, 157 N. Second St., will hold an election day luncheon from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the day of the May 16 primary, a spokesperson said.
A spokesperson said “we urge you to go out and vote, then come and eat at our Election Day luncheon.” The menu will include soup, salads, sandwiches, desserts and beverages. For take out, call (724) 872-7467. Delivery will be available to local businesses in the West Newton area.

Guest speakers from Re:Solve Crisis Services will discuss the unit’s support features. Sponsored by Allegheny County and UPMC Western Psychiatric Hospital, the 24-hour, 365-day crisis service is free to all Allegheny County residents.
Re:Solve offers a 24-hour hotline answered by trained clinicians and provides a mobile response team that travels where needed within the county.
