Eight hundred Mon Valley families received free Thanksgiving turkeys and ingredients for side dishes during a giveway Saturday morning at McKeesport Area High School.
The giveaway was held as a drive-through event to ensure social distancing during the COVID-19 pandemic. McKeesport police helped direct traffic as cars waited along Eden Park Blvd.
The giveaway was arranged by Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank, United Way of Southwestern Pennsylvania and state Rep. Austin Davis of McKeesport. Volunteers loaded boxes into the back seats and trunks of cars “bucket-brigade” style in the parking lot of Tiger Stadium.

White Oak Rotary Club will host a “fido walk” at 10 a.m. Saturday to raise money for the White Oak Safe Animal Haven.
Rotary member Dan Dougherty said the fundraiser is designed to replace the “Fido Ball” gala usually held in November.
“With COVID-19, that naturally couldn’t happen, so we came up with the idea of a 5K to replace it this year, and call it the Fido Walk,” Dougherty said. “Folks are invited to bring their dogs to walk with them if they’d like, as long as they’re under control and cleaned up after.”

City officials, parents and volunteers are blasting a decision by the Boys & Girls Club of Western Pennsylvania to close the LaRosa Boys & Girls Club on Ravine Street.
The Pittsburgh-based organization notified McKeesport Mayor Michael Cherepko of the closing in a letter to city hall on Wednesday, and with a posting on its website.
In an interview with the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Lisa Abel-Palmieri, president and chief executive officer of BGCWPA, called the closure a “merger” of the Duquesne and McKeesport programs, and blamed it on declining attendance in McKeesport and the high cost of overhead, as well as the COVID-19 pandemic.
But Cherepko and two former directors of the LaRosa club said Abel-Palmieri’s statements are not accurate.
“That story in the Post-Gazette made me sick,” said City Administrator Tom Maglicco, who served as executive director of the club for 13 years and sits on its advisory board. “In my opinion, she’s wrong. There is no doubt in my mind there’s enough kids in this community to fill that club.”

Christ Soul Saving Station Church, 1013 Kennedy Ave., Duquesne, will provide free Thanksgiving dinners to families in need on Nov. 21.
Bishop David Queen, senior pastor, said volunteers from the church will deliver the meals safely. To schedule a delivery, call (412) 689-3955.
Residents in need of a hot meal also may visit the church between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. Nov. 21, Queen said.

Weight restrictions have been posted on a portion of Dravosburg Hill due to the conditions of one of the overpasses.
Steve Cowan, district spokesman for the state Department of Transportation, said the bridge that crosses the Union Railroad tracks near Sandy Lake is restricted to trucks weighing no more than 22 tons, or combination vehicles up to 27 tons.
Warning signs were posted on Richland Avenue and Pittsburgh-McKeesport Boulevard last week.

The ramp from the south end of the McKeesport-Duquesne Bridge to Fifth Avenue in the city’s East End will remain closed through at least Nov. 27 so that crews can repair damaged concrete and expansion joints.
The closure began Wednesday. East Fifth Avenue also serves as state Route 148 between Downtown McKeesport and Route 30.

About 700 Mon-Yough area families will receive free Thanksgiving dinners with the help of state Rep. Austin Davis, Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank and United Way of Southwestern Pennsylvania.
Turkeys, boxes of stuffing and potatoes as well as canned gravy, cranberry sauce, vegetables and sweet potatoes will be distributed from 10 a.m. to 12 noon Nov. 21 at McKeesport Area High School, 1960 Eden Park Blvd.

With Halloween on Saturday, you’ve hopefully already made a plan for a costume. But have you considered the safest way to trick-or-treat this year?
Most local communities — McKeesport, North Versailles Twp., White Oak, Port Vue, and Liberty Borough — will observe Halloween with trick-or-treating during the hours of 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday.
Duquesne will observe trick-or-treating from 5 to 7 p.m. and will have a costume contest, with “grab-and-go” treats, from 4 to 5 p.m. at Memorial Park on Grant Avenue. To comply with COVID-19 safety recommendations, participants should enter via South Second Street and exit via South Third Street. The event is made possible by city officials, Duquesne PRIDE and the Duquesne PartnerSHIP.
Dravosburg will observe trick-or-treating from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Saturday, with a Halloween costume parade at the borough’s ballfields at 4:30 p.m. Social distancing rules will be in place and attendees are asked to wear face masks.
Prizes will be given to the prettiest costume, ugliest/scariest costume and most original costume. Children ages 0 to 13 are allowed to participate.

The West Newton Library will be selling pies to raise money. Order forms are available at Gary Johnson’s Gingerbread Bakery, 111 South Second St., or inside the library, 124 North Water St., or may be obtained by sending email to westnewton@wlnonline.org.
Pie orders must be received by Nov. 21 and may be picked up between 12 noon and 6 p.m. Nov. 24, at the bakery.
Available pies include pumpkin, apple, sugar-free apple, Dutch apple, cherry, Dutch cherry, peach, blueberry and coconut cream. Each pie is $12. Pumpkin roll also is available for $10.
Payment with forms can be dropped off at the bakery or mailed to West Newton Library, P.O. Box 221, West Newton, PA 15089.
