Retired postal worker Chuck Jarrell will be up before 6 a.m. this Saturday, buying dozens of donuts for his former colleagues at the McKeesport post office.
"I like to get them all sugared-up before they go out," he says, joking.
Saturday is a special day for the men and women of the McKeesport post office --- and post offices around the country --- as the National Association of Letter Carriers will be running its 26th annual Stamp Out Hunger food drive.
Since 1993, the food drive organized by the postal workers' union has collected 1.6 billion --- that's 1,600,000,000 --- pounds of food for the needy and hungry.

Author and motivational speaker Jon Leonetti will lead a three-day "mission" at Corpus Christi Roman Catholic Church in June.
Leonetti, a Catholic radio talk-show host based in Des Moines, Iowa, will be the featured attraction at the "Surge of the Heart" Parish Mission at 7 p.m. June 4, 5 and 6.
The event is free and open to the public. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. each night.

The Mon Yough Chorale, a community chorus based in the McKeesport and White Oak area, has scheduled several upcoming concerts, including a Memorial Day-themed celebration in Monongahela.
At 6 p.m. May 30, the chorale will perform in a Memorial Day-themed event at the Aquatorium in Monongahela, Washington County, at a ceremony to honor fallen troops.
Immediately following the ceremony, the Mon Yough Chorale will entertain at a reception at Monongahela Valley Hospital, Carroll Twp.
A spokeswoman said the chorale's big spring concert is scheduled for 3 p.m. June 3 at Sampson's Mills Presbyterian Church, 1665 Lincoln Way, White Oak.

There were more than 750 people in the Class of 1968 from McKeesport Senior High School, but planners of an upcoming reunion still need contact information for more than 200 of them.
That's according to Nancy Paradise, one of the organizers of the upcoming 50th class reunion, to be held Aug. 24 and 25.
The reunion will include a dinner on Aug. 24 at the Antonelli Event Center in Irwin, and a picnic at Lake Emilie in Renziehausen Park on Aug. 25.

The new owners of the sewage treatment plant serving more than 64,000 people in the McKeesport area are inviting area residents to inspect the facility --- and ask questions about how it works.
Pennsylvania American Water will hold an open house and offer free tours of the McKeesport Wastewater Treatment Plant from 9 a.m. to 12 noon May 12, a spokesman said Tuesday.
Tours will last about 45 minutes each and will include gifts, refreshments and activities for kids.
“Our McKeesport team treats approximately 13 million gallons of wastewater each day,” said Chuck Schultz, operations superintendent for PAWC. “This open house will provide our customers with a unique opportunity to learn more about wastewater treatment and meet the professionals who make it happen 24/7.”

White Oak officials and managers of Heritage Hill Pool are preparing for the 2018 season.
At April's meeting, council established a rate of $60 per resident for a season pass or $100 for a nonresident.
The pool is scheduled to open May 28 (Memorial Day), and will be open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., seven days per week, weather permitting.
Council is considering a request from the White Oak Swim Team Board requesting permission to place a storage shed on the pool grounds and to sell and hang fundraising banners on the fence of the complex. A decision will be reached at a later date, officials said.

The annual White Oak Borough spring clean-up is slated for 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday (April 28) at the Heritage Hill Pavilion. Volunteers are welcome to participate and are encouraged to come at 9:30 a.m. to prepare for the event.
The purpose of the event is to remove litter and debris from roadside and to increase public awareness of litter problems in the borough, Councilman Lou Bender said.
Volunteers will be issued safety clothing and rescue and police vehicles will travel with groups to ensure safety.

McKeesport native Brandon Short will deliver the keynote remarks at Penn State Greater Allegheny's second-annual Crossing Bridges Summit.
The event is scheduled for 7 p.m. May 2 at the Wunderley Gymnasium on the McKeesport campus. General admission tickets are free, but an RSVP is required. VIP tickets are $15. For more information, visit the university's website.
Short is a 1995 graduate of McKeesport Area High School, where he was a standout athlete, lettering in both basketball and football. He was part of the team that won a state football championship in 1994, and was named Associated Press Pennsylvania Big School Player-of-the-Year during his senior year.

A ceremony and luncheon this Sunday will mark the 75th anniversary of the sinking during World War II of the S.S. McKeesport.
The event begins at 1 p.m. April 29 at Jacob Woll Pavilion in Renziehausen Park, a spokeswoman said.
The S.S. McKeesport, a merchant marine vessel, was one of 30 supply ships named for cities where U.S. Steel had large operations.
Built by U.S. Steel's Federal Shipbuilding and Drydock Co. in Kearney, N.J., it was completed in 1919 and christened by Eleanor Cornelius, daughter of the general manager of McKeesport's National Tube Co. pipe mill.

Hard-to-recycle items such as cellular phones, computer monitors and tires will be collected during a recycling event from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday in Renziehausen Park.
The event, organized by McKeesport Mayor Michael Cherepko and city officials, is open to all residents of the McKeesport Area School District, including Dravosburg, South Versailles Twp., Versailles and White Oak, a spokeswoman said.
"Respect Our City, Respect Our Earth" is being supported in part by the Angora Gardens Junior Gardeners, the McKeesport Lions Club and the school district.
