St. Sava Serbian Orthodox Church, 901 Hartman St., is holding a fish fry from 12 noon to 6 p.m. Fridays, through March 30, a spokeswoman said.

The menu is available for either dine-in or take-out and includes a fish sandwich for $8, a baked or fried fish dinner for $10, a shrimp dinner for $10 or a crab cake dinner for $12.

Dinners include a side of french fries, rice or haluski; cole slaw; coffee or tea; and a dessert.

Credit Union Slates Annual Meeting March 10

Members of a local credit union will meet March 10 to elect its board of directors and hear of the organization's plans for the coming year.

A spokesperson for Parkview Community Federal Credit Union said its 83rd annual meeting will begin at 10 a.m. in the cafeteria of Serra Catholic High School, 200 Hershey Drive.

In addition, the credit union is seeking nominees for two seats on the board. Parkview Community members who want to be considered for one of the two seats should send a letter of intent no later than Feb. 24 to the credit union office, 2100 Eden Park Blvd., McKeesport 15132.

Pancake Breakfast Slated Feb. 24 at Renzie

McKeesport Unit of the NAACP will hold its annual pancake breakfast Feb. 24 at Renziehausen Park, a spokeswoman said.

The event is scheduled for 8 a.m. to 12 noon at Jacob Woll Pavilion. The cost is $8 for adults and $4 for children 12 and under.

The menu will include regular, buckwheat and fresh blueberry pancakes; turkey, pork and beef sausage; fruit cocktail; coffee, tea, water and juice; and assorted desserts for sale.

Homestead Receives $100K Grant for Bike Park

Homestead Borough will receive $100,000 toward creation of a one-mile-long trail and bike park that will provide a direct connection between the Eighth Avenue business district and the Great Allegheny Passage bicycle trail.

The grant was one of 45 projects in 22 counties --- totalling $41.5 million --- funded last week through grants from the state Department of Transportation's Multimodal Transportation Fund.

Heartland Hospice Offers Volunteer Opportunities

Heartland Hospice is seeking volunteers with the compassion to offer a smile, an ear and a warm heart to patients and their families, says Patrick Fisher, volunteer coordinator in the Irwin office.

The service covers the Mon Valley, Westmoreland, Washington and Allegheny counties, as well as part of Armstrong County, he says.

Volunteers are needed to visit with patients who have serious and terminal illnesses, so that staff can help assist their families in need, Fisher says.

Crew Missions Seeks Volunteers For 2018

The Crew Missions is looking for volunteers --- including individuals, groups, churches, nonprofit organizations and clubs --- to help local residents in need.

The Clairton-based charity completes household maintenance projects for elderly and disabled residents in the Clairton, Duquesne, Glassport, McKeesport, Pleasant Hills, West Mifflin and White Oak areas.

Since 2013, a spokesperson said, The Crew Missions has helped 79 homeowners.

Community-Wide Lenten Services Begin Feb. 21

The McKeesport Area Ministerium will hold community-wide Lenten services on Wednesdays beginning Feb. 21, a spokeswoman said.

For Christians of the Western tradition, including the Roman Catholic Church and most mainline Protestant denominations, Lent is supposed to be a period of fasting and penitence for 40 days leading up until Easter Sunday.

This year, Lent begins on Feb. 14 with the observance of Ash Wednesday.

All of the services will begin at 12 noon and are open to anyone, of any denomination. A light lunch will be served at each location following the service, and a free will offering will be taken to help defray the cost of the meal.

Penn State Awards $50K Grant to Support McKeesport Center

Penn State University has awarded a $50,000 grant to the Greater Allegheny Campus to support its operation of the new McKeesport Community Center.

The grant was one of $200,000 in "Invent Penn State" awards made to campuses across Pennsylvania. Others were awarded to Penn State's Beaver, DuBois and Hazleton campuses.

Located in the former YWCA of McKeesport on Ninth Avenue, Downtown, the center is designed to offer entrepreneurship lessons and continuing education to McKeesport-area residents.

It had a "soft opening" in October, says Victoria Garwood, director of enrollment management at Penn State Greater Allegheny, but activity has ramped up since then.

Deadline Fast Approaching For Special Election in 18th District

Residents in part of the Mon-Yough area who are not registered to vote, but want to participate in the upcoming special election to replace former U.S. Rep. Tim Murphy, are encouraged to register by Feb. 12.

Jerry Tyskiewicz, director of the Department of Administrative Services for Allegheny County, said that's when voters must be registered if they want to participate in the March 13 special election.

In addition, voters who are already registered must notify the Allegheny County Division of Elections by Feb. 12 if they want to vote in the special election and they have moved or changed their name or party affiliation, Tyskiewicz said.

Voters in the 18th Congressional District are choosing between Republican Rick Saccone of Elizabeth Twp. and Democrat Conor Lamb of Mt. Lebanon. Lamb is a former federal prosecutor and Saccone is currently a state legislator.

In the Mon-Yough area, Elizabeth, Forward, North Huntingdon and South Versailles townships are part of the 18th district, along with Elizabeth, Jefferson Hills and West Elizabeth boroughs.

White Oak Legion Slates Oldies Dance
