More than 70 vendors, community groups and public service agencies will gather on Fifth Avenue, Downtown, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. today as McKeesport celebrates its 60th annual Good Neighbor Day.
The event will stretch from Market to Locust streets and include games, a bounce house, inflatables, a playground area, and a petting zoo near the intersection of Fifth and Market, said a spokesperson for McKeesport Mayor Michael Cherepko.
The National Weather Service in Moon Twp. said that conditions should be ideal for Wednesday’s event, with little to no chance of rain, mild winds and temperatures ranging from 78 to 81 degrees during midday.
The Mon River Fleet Lions Club will be passing out freeze pops, water, and chips, while McKeesport Fire Department will have snow cones.

UPMC McKeesport is joining with the city’s faith-based “Call to Action” community health team to host the fourth annual McKeesport Community Day on from 12 noon to 4 p.m. Saturday (June 8) on Market Street at Fifth Avenue, Downtown.
McKeesport Community Day will be a “free, joy-filled day” for the whole family, featuring the Bill Henry Band, health screenings, children’s activities, raffles, giveaways, food and refreshments and more, said Sarah Diest, UPMC spokeswoman.
UPMC McKeesport aims to promote health awareness and healthier lifestyles through free health screenings, health education, and access to local resources, she said.
“UPMC McKeesport’s goal is to foster connection within the community, while sharing how important it is to prioritize your health,” said Kari Bedillion, vice president of operations for UPMC East and UPMC McKeesport. “We are looking forward to celebrating the community of people we are thankful to care for.”
The event is being made possible thanks to the support of UPMC McKeesport, McKeesport Hospital Foundation, UPMC McKeesport Medical Executive Committee, UPMC Health Plan, UPMC Western Behavioral Health, Bethlehem Baptist Church, Beulah Park United Methodist Church, Sister to Sister Outreach Ministries and Zion Baptist Church.

Dress for Success Pittsburgh will hold an event from 1 to 3 p.m. June 17 at the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh, 1507 Library Ave., a spokeswoman said.
The non-profit group provides business-ready clothing, shoes and accessories for women and female-identified persons who are applying for jobs and need wardrobe items to attend employment interviews.
Attendees can also receive personal care items, connections to interview and resume support, and other assistance.

The McKeesport support group of the National Alliance on Mental Illness will hold its monthly meeting at 6 p.m. June 5 in Room 122 of the Frable Building, Penn State Greater Allegheny, a spokeswoman said.
The meeting is open to families and friends of loved ones living with mental illness.
A “care and share” session will be held. This opportunity offers understanding and support unique to those who are affected by mental health conditions of loved ones, the spokeswoman said.

Friends and family of Karli Short will hold a fundraiser June 7 to raise money for the scholarship fund in her name at Penn State Greater Allegheny in McKeesport — and for additional scholarships which will soon be extended to students at the University Park campus.
The third-annual Karli Short Better Tomorrow Scholarship Fund dinner will be held at the Omni William Penn Hotel, Downtown Pittsburgh. Tickets are available online and start at $225.
Short, 26, a personal care worker who also had a catering business, was found dead outside her Christy Park home on Sept. 13, 2021. She was approximately four months pregnant at the time.

Volunteers from Peoples Gas fanned out through McKeesport & Versailles Cemetery on Friday to place 2,000 American flags on the graves of veterans.
Despite inclement weather, about 40 employees completed the task in less than two hours with help from Amvets members, said Nick Paradise, Peoples Gas spokesman.
“While many of the veteran graves are in designated sections, plenty were within family plots or otherwise isolated, so our team spread out amongst the 44,000 gravestones to do our best to mark and honor each veteran, as well as the Civil War and WWII memorials,” Paradise said.

The Allegheny County Health Department is requesting public comment on its 2025 Air Monitoring Network Plan, an annual report that provides a detailed description of how and where air pollution is monitored in Allegheny County.
Comments will be accepted until 4:30 p.m. on June 14. Comments may be submitted via e-mail to david.good@alleghenycounty.us.
The 2025 Air Monitoring Network Plan is a document required by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. It provides the specific location of each monitoring station, siting criteria, monitoring methods and objectives, frequency of sampling, pollutants measured at each station and aerial photographs showing their physical location.
The 2025 Air Monitoring Annual Network Plan was posted onto the ACHD Air Quality website on May 16. All correspondence must include first and last name and a complete mailing address. It can be downloaded as a PDF.

Local officials are praising the speedy installation of a new traffic signal on Richland Avenue in Dravosburg.
The signal, which allows left turns at the intersection of Fifth Street and Richland, near Italian Village Pizza, is one of several improvements made to Dravosburg Hill in the wake of a crash between a car and a school-bus that claimed the life of a Serra Catholic High School student and seriously injured the bus driver and several other passengers.
The light is currently set to blinking red and yellow but will be operating in a few days, said a spokesperson for State Rep. Nick Pisciottano.
The signal was installed by the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission, which is currently working on an extension of the Mon-Fayette Expressway — Route 43 — that will cross Richland Avenue not far from the intersection.

Penn State Extension will host a food-safety course in McKeesport designed for volunteers who may be working at community events this year.
“Cooking for Crowds for Volunteers” will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. June 4 at Penn State Greater Allegheny, said Elizabeth Kocsis, Penn State Extension educator and Nutrition Links Supervisor for Allegheny County
Cooking for Crowds is a food safety course intended specifically to address safe food handling of foods served by volunteer-based organizations. It covers topics such as how food becomes unsafe, preparation practices to keep food safe, and purchasing and storage of food and supplies.
