Take Action Advocacy Group will hold a town hall Saturday to discuss public safety, police accountability and voter engagement.
The discussion, organized in cooperation with ALC Court Watch, begins at 2 p.m. Nov. 2 at Jacob Woll Pavilion at Renziehausen Park in McKeesport.
Organizers called the forum necessary in the wake of several incidents involving local police officers, including the arrest of a former McKeesport police detective and the McKeesport Area School District’s police chief; as well as an ongoing investigation by the Allegheny County district attorney’s office into items reportedly missing from the McKeesport police evidence room.
Former detective Joseph Osinski is charged by state investigators with diverting more than $1 million from Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 91, where he served as financial secretary, while school police Chief Brenda Sawyer, who is currently on leave from the school police, is accused of misusing funds from her previous job with the state Attorney General’s Office, as well as from the McKeesport NAACP.
A former school security guard is also charged in connection with a narcotics case.
“Such stories have been prevalent in McKeesport over the last year, with some occurring in the last month,” a TAAG spokesperson said. “While these issues are not unique to small communities and are occurring elsewhere, they highlight significant problems that must be addressed.
“Moreover, the reality of the Black experience with police and structural systems must be recognized, and TAAG will not shy away from doing this,” the spokesperson said.
Last year, the American Civil Liberties Union of Pennsylvania filed a lawsuit against the city, Allegheny County, and more than three dozen police officers on behalf of three residents who allege their constitutional rights were violated in December 2020 during the search for a suspect accused of shooting a McKeesport police officer.
The lawsuit is pending in Allegheny County Common Pleas Court.
Saturday’s town hall will focus on public safety, leadership accountability and voter engagement.
Attendees will receive a gift card, and the event will feature discussions, information on voting locations, and steps for community action, TAAG said.
Registration is recommended. For more information, email info@takeactionadvocacygroup.org.
