McKeesport Area School District officials have approved the hiring of a police chief and police officer for the 2019-20 school year.
At last week’s school board meeting, school directors also voted to approve a $55,000 annual salary for the police chief and $50,000 for a police officer. School Directors Mindy Sturgess and David Donato left the meeting prior to the vote.
Currently, the district contracts with the City of McKeesport for a school resource officer.
“This is no reflection on our current SRO, who has done an outstanding job for many years,” said Mark Holtzman Jr., district superintendent. “It's an opportunity to have our own police department and save some money down the road.”

UPDATED to clarify that the shooting did not involve the prom.
A McKeesport teen-ager was killed early Friday morning in a shooting on Pittsburgh's South Side, less than a week before she was to graduate from high school.
Morgan Dunston, 18, died at UPMC Mercy Hospital, Uptown, of injuries received in the incident, the Allegheny County Medical Examiner's Office said. An online fundraising campaign has been created to help the family to defray funeral expenses.
Dunston was a senior at McKeesport Area High School, and friends said she was leaving a dance when the shooting occurred. Although McKeesport held its senior prom Thursday night, Dunston did not attend, said Kristen James, district spokeswoman.
"This young lady was an active student within our high school who was slated to graduate next week," said James, who called the shooting "senseless."
