Light-Up Night in West Newton is Nov. 27

Downtown West Newton Inc. will hold its annual “Miracle on Main Street” light-up night on Nov. 27.

Aaron Nelson, chair of DWNI, said this year’s theme is “A Charlie Brown Christmas.” The event begins at 3 p.m. and ends at 8:30 p.m., with a parade on Main Street to beginning at 5:15 p.m.

The community Christmas tree will be lighted directly following the parade.

W.N. Library Plans ‘Fill-a-Bag’ Book Sale

Due to inclement weather, the West Newton Public Library will hold its “fill-a-bag” used book sale at the West Newton gymnasium at the corner of Vine and Fifth streets, a spokesperson said.

Hours are 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 22 and 23.

First Church of God, 157 North Second St., West Newton will hold an election day lunch from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Nov. 2, a spokesperson said.

Selections will include chili, chicken noodle or broccoli cheese soup, chicken salad and ham barbecue sandwiches, hot dogs with sauerkraut, potato salad or macaroni salad, and pie or cake. For more information, call (724) 872-7467.

 

W.N. Library Plans Fundraiser Sept. 19

West Newton Public Library will hold a fundraiser from 1 to 4 p.m. Sept. 19 at the Le Grande Balll Room, 105 South Second St., said Robin Matty, library manager.

Tickets to the annual “Tea-riffic” cost $20. Tickets can be purchased at the library or at Gary’s Chuck Wagon Restaurant 105 South Second St, during restaurant hours and library hours. The event will include refreshments, a gift basket auction and other games.

In other news, Matty is encouraging all residents of the West Newton area to visit the newly remodeled and rededicated children’s room at the library.

W.N. Church Plans Peach Festival

West Newton First Church of God will hold a peach festival fundraiser 4 to 7 p.m. Sept. 2, a spokesperson said.

The menu will include hot dogs, sauerkraut, sloppy joes, BBQ pulled pork, baked beans, potato or macaroni salad, cake, ice cream, beverages, and of course, peaches, including peach cobbler.

WN Library Celebrates New Children’s Room

West Newton Public Library held an open house and ribbon cutting ceremony of their new children’s room on June 30, after a year’s delay because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The renovation and design was dedicated in memory of former library board member Patty Medsger and her mother, Emma Jean Pritchard, for their contributions to the library. The event was attended by family and friends and concluded with light refreshments.

A spokesperson for the library board thanked everyone who donated funds in memory of Medsger and Pritchard. These funds along with a bequest from a longtime patron and a grant from the Trixie Puff Foundation were used to make the renovations to the library.

The library is located at 124 North Water St. and is open 12 to 5 p.m. Mondays and Thursdays, 12 to 7 p.m. Wednesdays, and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays. For more information, call (724) 633-0798.

 

WN Library to Dedicate Children’s Room

West Newton Library will hold a dedication and open house of its new children’s room from 6 to 7:30 p.m. June 30, a spokeswoman said. The room is being dedicated in memory of Patricia Medsger and Emma Jean Pritchard.

Visitors are asked to wear masks and practice social distancing. The library is located at 124 N. Water St.

The spokeswoman said the library specificaly needs used adult fiction hardcover book donations. The library is open from 12 noon to 5 p.m. Mondays and Thursdays, 12 noon to 7 p.m. Wednesdays, and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays.

Books being donated for sale should not be placed in return book drop box. Outside of business hours, books can be dropped off in bags or boxes on the front porch.

 

W.N. Group Plans Memorial Day Weekend Concert

Community Revitalization of West Newton is sponsoring a Patriotic Concert at Vine Street Park from 6 to 8 p.m. May 30, a spokesperson said. The show will feature a 45-minute performance from Cathi Rhodes as Patsy Cline to honor all veterans, followed by other entertainers.

There will be food trucks for refreshments. Attendees should bring their own lawn chair or blanket. Organizers said they will be following COVID-19 guidelines and the audience will be asked to wear masks and practice social distancing.

Leaders of CROWN said they also are looking for local vendors and food trucks for an event to be held June 12 in conjunction with the West Newton Community Yard Sale. For more information, call Jennifer Bittner at (724) 344-4002.

West Newton First Church of God will be holding an Election Day luncheon from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. May 18, a spokesperson said. Lunches are available for take-out only.

W.N. Library Slates ‘Fill-a-Bag’ Book Sale

West Newton Library, 124 N. Water St., will hold a jewelry and “fill-a-bag” book sale from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. April 24 in the parking lot, a spokesperson said.

All visitors will be asked to practicing social distancing and to wear masks. Library volunteers said that more than two years’ worth of donations of gently used books have been sanitized and quarantined, and will be on sale.
