McKeesport Art Group will celebrate its 60th Anniversary this weekend with one of its largest spring art shows in recent memory.

Scheduled to go on display at 5 p.m. Friday at Jacob Woll Pavilion in Renziehausen Park are 135 entries, including many from area students, said Jan Catalogna, group president.

Awards will be presented during a ceremony at 7 p.m. Friday. Hours are 12 noon to 8 p.m. Saturday and 12 noon to 6 p.m. Sunday, Catalogna said. There is no admission charge, and original art and crafts will be for sale.

"We have metal working, 3-D art, photography and computer art, in addition to" paintings and drawings, she said.

The best entries will be awarded cash prizes following judging by Robert Huckestein, an award-winning artist from the North Hills of Pittsburgh who teaches at Point Park University and Pittsburgh Center for the Arts.

McKeesport Art Group was founded in 1958 by several local artists, including Jeff Madden, former art director of the G.C. Murphy Co., who became regionally famous for his paintings depicting life in McKeesport in the '50s and '60s.

Today, most members of the group are from the Mon-Yough area, but one member drives into meetings from Armstrong County, Catalogna said.

On Saturday, several of those members will take part in an activity called "Paint Your Pet." Photos of pets have been submitted by a group of people, and members of the McKeesport Art Group will paint portraits of those pets while their owners --- and visitors --- watch, Catalogna said.

Outside of the shows, the group meets at 1 p.m. on the third Monday of every month in February, March, April, October and November, and at 6:30 p.m. in June, July, August and September at the Jacob Woll Pavilion, and sponsors art lessons and classes at Carnegie Library of McKeesport and at other locations.
