Two men are being sought by Allegheny County police in connection with the death Tuesday night of a teen-ager in McKeesport.
Khaire Charles Cole, 17, of North Versailles Twp. died just before midnight at UPMC Presbyterian hospital in Oakland of a gunshot wound to the head, the Allegheny County medical examiner's office said.
His death has been ruled a homicide, a spokesperson said Wednesday night.
Another victim was wounded in the altercation, Allegheny County police Lt. Andrew Schurman said in a prepared statement. The second victim's name was not released. He was listed in stable condition and is expected to recover.
Schurman said McKeesport police and McKeesport Ambulance Rescue Service paramedics were dispatched to the intersection of Forbes Alley and Sumac Street at around 10 p.m. Tuesday after 9-1-1 callers reported hearing shots fired.
When they arrived, Schurman said, police discovered two people suffering from gunshot wounds --- one victim, identified as Cole, wounded in the head, and the other victim wounded in the leg.
County homicide detectives were called to the scene and determined that two groups were fighting before gunfire broke out, Schurman said. Police believe Cole was involved in the altercation, he said, but that the second victim was a passer-by who was not part of the argument.
Police obtained surveillance footage from near the shooting scene and believe that two black men fled the area immediately following the incident. "The motive for the shooting is not exceptionally clear," Schurman said.
Police have not yet released the surveillance images of the possible suspects, a county spokeswoman said.
Anyone with information concerning this incident is being urged to call the Allegheny County Police Tipline at 1-833-ALL-TIPS (1-833-255-8477). Callers can remain anonymous.
