A McKeesport woman was arrested after police allege she attempted to run over someone she had been having an argument with, but hit a bystander instead.

Jakiia Williams, 32, is being held in the Allegheny County Jail pending formal arraignment, said Lt. Andrew Schurman of the Allegheny County police homicide unit. Charges against Williams include attempted homicide.

The 72-year-old man who was struck remains in critical condition with "life-threatening" injuries at a hospital, Schurman said. The victim's name was not released.

McKeesport police on routine patrol responded to the Harrison Village housing complex just before 3 a.m. Thursday when they heard gunshots.

As they arrived, police said, they saw a white Chevrolet Impala fleeing the scene and stopped the car, detaining the driver.

Upon investigation, they learned that a pedestrian had just been struck and seriously injured by the same vehicle.

Police said the driver, identified as Williams, was involved in an argument with another person when she got into her car and tried to run that person over, but struck the victim instead.

Police believe that some other person fired a gun at the car as it fled, but Schurman said no ballistic evidence was found at the scene.

Williams is charged by Allegheny County police with aggravated assault, aggravated assault by vehicle, attempted homicide, aggravated assault by vehicle while driving under the influence, leaving the scene of an accident involving serious injury, driving under the influence of alcohol, driving with a suspended license, careless driving and reckless driving.

Schurman said police are seeking additional witnesses to the incident. Anyone with information concerning this incident is asked to call the Allegheny County Police Tipline at 1-833-ALL-TIPS (1-833-255-8477). Callers can remain anonymous.

County police also accept tips via their Facebook and Twitter sites.
