An Elizabeth man was killed Friday afternoon in his East End auto repair shop in what police described as a dispute with a customer.

John T. Benedek Jr., 41, died in the emergency room at UPMC McKeesport hospital, the Allegheny County Medical Examiner's Office said.

Benedek was the co-owner and operator of J&M Automotive Services on East Fifth Avenue near Hartman Street. The garage opened in 2017, according to tax records and posts on Facebook.

Allegheny County police Lt. Andrew Schurman said McKeesport police and McKeesport Ambulance Rescue Service were called to the business at 3:12 p.m. and found a man, later identified as Benedek, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.

He died at the hospital about a half-hour later.

Police said a man they identified as Eben Brown, 46, of McKeesport turned himself in at the city police station and told officers he shot Benedek.

During a subsequent investigation, Schurman said, detectives from the Allegheny County police homicide unit determined that Brown arrived at J&M on Friday afternoon and confronted the victim about work that had been done on his car.

Police believe Brown then shot Benedek, Schurman said.

Brown is being held in the Allegheny County Jail on a charge of criminal homicide pending a preliminary arraignment.
