A 16-year-old male student at McKeesport Area High School is being held at Shuman Juvenile Detention Center after police said he brought a gun onto a school bus.

In a prepared statement, police said the student got onto the bus after dismissal on Monday and brandished the firearm. A video circulated on social media showed the student with the weapon, police said.

A school district spokesperson said MASD officials learned of the incident Tuesday morning and called police.

Police reviewed surveillance camera footage that showed the student with the handgun and arrested him Tuesday at the high school. Following questioning, police charged the student with possession of a firearm by a minor and possession of a weapon on school property.

Later Tuesday, police announced a second arrest of a 15-year-old male student. In a statement released Tuesday night, McKeesport police said the other student was not in class on Monday but entered school property and boarded the bus at dismissal.

Police said they believe the 15-year-old student passed the handgun to the 16-year-old.

The high school is equipped with metal detectors, which all students and visitors are required to pass through before entering. Based on video surveillance, police said, the 15-year-old did not make it inside the high school on Monday.

The 15-year-old also was charged with possession of a firearm by a minor and possession of a weapon on school property.

District officials referred further questions to police. The investigation is still continuing, police said.
