Three McKeesport Area High School students have been awarded scholarships to Seton Hill University in Greensburg to pursue degrees in science, math or technology.

The awards to Terayah Parris, Myah Roka and Emily Filotei from the Girls of STEM program were announced at  the Jan. 23 school board meeting.

Each student will receive $20,000 per academic year, district officials said. Filotei was presented with a certificate of recognition from Holtzman. Parris and Roka did not attend the meeting.

The trio were recommended for the scholarships by math teacher Myleen Kiska and science teachers Kathy Kenny and Susan Lewandowski.

“These students may not realize it now, but I can tell you, as someone with around $200,000 in student debt, they will realize their good fortune in graduating college with significantly less debt as a result of the scholarships,” said Mark Holtzman Jr., district superintendent.

In Other Business:

The board unanimously approved the retirement of associate high school principal Tom Bauman effective June 30. Bauman’s leave of absence was also unanimously approved, effective from Dec. 13, 2018 to June 30.

An agreement was approved with the Department of the Air Force to continue to operate an Air Force Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps Unit effective July 1. Holtzman said there are approximately 100 to 110 students participating in the program.

The board approved the hiring of Kevin Johnson for the Air Force JROTC program under “extra-curricular activities” for the 2018-19 school year at a salary of $2,500.

A resolution was approved to continue participation in the Allegheny Intermediate Unit Joint Purchasing Program. The AIU's joint purchasing program enables participating school districts to lower their costs by purchasing materials and supplies in volume, while eliminating the costs of the bid procedure, Holtzman said.

Reporting on behalf of the board's buildings and grounds committee, School Director Steven Kondrosky said bathrooms have been repaired and a new plexiglass trophy case was installed in the high school.
