North Versailles Twp. officials are getting closer to tearing down five buildings as part of their 2019 demolition project.

In February, commissioners initiated the legal process and began to solicit quotes for asbestos inspections. Condemnation hearings were held April 25.

None of the owners appeared at the condemnation hearings and no one objected to the township recommendations to raze and condemn the structures, township solicitor Greg Evashavik said at the May 16 meeting.

Commissioners by 7-0 vote awarded a contract for $58,275 to DJ Demolition of Braddock to demolish five structures.

DJ Demolition's bid was the lowest of four submitted, according to township engineer Dave Gilliland.

The properties slated for demolition include 109 Westinghouse Ave., 91 Port Perry Ave., 1704 Girard Ave., and 115 and 123 Versailles Ave.

In other business, commissioners also voted to authorize the following:

The cost of materials for the Eagle Scout project at Fairhaven Park in the amount of $1,200;
The purchase of two benches for the Eagle Scout project at Crestas Park in the amount of $941.83;
Payments of $4,900 to Sports & Recreation Associates of Armstrong County to supply and install a five-foot concrete pad at Fairhaven Park and remove and dispose of old bleachers; $8,810 to remove and re-mulch Washington Road Park; $8,550 to remove and re-mulch West Carter Park; and $160 to install four swings at Clinton Edward playground;
The purchase of eight 10-by-20-foot tents for the parks and recreation department's use at a cost not to exceed $1.800;
Payments of $2,717 to Red Rock Fence Co. of White Oak to install a high chain link fence and gate at Crestas ball field, and $3,209 to install an entrance gate at Crestas ball field; and
Payment of $2,400 for a barnyard petting zoo and pony rides for the 150th celebration.

Commissioners unanimously approved an agreement with the state Department of Transportation for wheelchair accessible ramps on Route 30; and ratified a collective bargaining agreement with Teamsters Local 205, effective Jan. 1, 2019 through Dec. 31, 2022, to cover unionized members of the police department.
