West Newton First Church of God will celebrate its 175th Anniversary on Sept. 29 with a special morning worship service at 10:25 a.m., followed by a catered lunch at the church, a spokesperson said.

Reservations for lunch are required by calling (724) 872-7467 and leaving a message. The deadline for reservations is Sept. 23. Donations will be accepted to offset the cost of lunch.

The church began in the home of Timothy Obley, 167 N. Second St., and the first minister, Elder Joseph A. Dodson, was appointed Oct. 28, 1844.

The "Bethel," or "house of God," was built in 1852 at 157 N. Second St., but needed extensive remodeling after a fire in 1884. The church continues to meet in this building today.

"Our service will include more history of the church and special music," a church spokesperson said. "We are blessed to be able to celebrate what God has done and what He will continue to do in our church and our community. We would love to have you celebrate with us."
