Police are asking for the public’s help in identifying the suspect who shot a 19-year-old man Sunday afternoon on Freemont Street near the site of the former George Washington School.

The victim, whose name has not been released, is in critical condition at an unidentified trauma hospital, police said.

Allegheny County police Lt. Venerando Costa said the incident happened at around 2:30 p.m. Police said the victim was a passenger in a gray Ford Taurus being driven by a 20-year-old man. A 13-year-old boy was in the back seat of the vehicle, Costa said.

As the car turned from Freemont into Irwin Street, police said, someone began firing into the car.

The car fled toward the intersection of Freemont and Jenny Lind streets, where the victim was found by McKeesport police and paramedics suffering from multiple gunshot wounds, Costa said.

Police said the shooter was described as a black male wearing dark-colored clothing.

No other injuries were reported by police.

County and McKeesport police are working to determine the motive for the shooting and identify suspects, Costa said.

Anyone with information concerning this incident is asked to call the Allegheny County police tip line at 1-833-ALL-TIPS (1-833-255-8477). Callers may remain anonymous.

County police also may be reached via Twitter and Facebook.
