A city woman died after falling or jumping from a ninth-story window at the Midtown Towers apartments, Allegheny County police said.

Aaliyah Johnson, 32, was pronounced dead at the scene in the 500 block of Sinclair Street at around 8:21 a.m. Tuesday, said county police Lt. Venerando Costa.

A passerby discovered Johnson’s body on the sidewalk and called McKeesport police.

Police reviewed video surveillance from a security camera on the ninth floor and determined that no one entered or left Johnson’s apartment before or after the incident, Costa said Wednesday.

Also known as Aaliyah Denise Lohan, Johnson had an active social media following and worked as a hairstylist and makeup artist, as well as a rap artist and MC and disc jockey for events and dances.

On Wednesday afternoon, the sidewalk near Johnson’s apartment had been decorated by friends with candles and flowers.

Although a release from the Allegheny County Medical Examiner’s office identified her as “male,” friends said Johnson was transgender. In April, Johnson spoke to the QueerPgh blog about the Trans Day of Visibility, an annual event held on March 31.

Costa said police are awaiting a toxicology report from the medical examiner’s office and Johnson’s cause and manner of death are still pending.
