Glenwood Interchange Work Resumes Next Week

If you use the Glenwood Bridge to get from the Mon Valley to Oakland or downtown Pittsburgh, beware --- Phase 3 of work on the busy commuter route begins on Monday, Feb. 22.

The work will include the closure of the northbound lanes of Route 837 --- heading from West Homestead to Pittsburgh's South Side --- and the restriction of traffic in the southbound lanes near the WHEMCO building.

And that's not the only closure on the route --- beginning this Friday, Feb. 19, and continuing through Feb. 22, Second Avenue in the Greenfield section of the city will be closed entirely in the area around the railroad overpass. (The two projects are not related.)

The restrictions near the Glenwood Bridge are necessary so that crews from J. F. Shea Construction, Inc., can conduct deck replacement work on Route 837 and the associated ramps as part of a $16.9 million upgrade around the interchange at the south end of the Glenwood Bridge.

A district spokesman for the state Department of Transportation said the overall project includes pier cap repairs, lighting upgrades, safety improvements, approach work and other miscellaneous construction activities.

Traffic heading northbound on Route 837 will be shifted into the southbound lanes near the Whemco Building. Single-lane traffic in each direction will be maintained in the southbound lanes.  A temporary roadway and traffic signal will be implemented to allow Route 837 to intersect with Route 885.

Additionally, the following ramps will close to traffic:

• Northbound Route 837 ramp to northbound Route 837 (Carson Street)
• Northbound Route 837 ramp to southbound Route 885 (Glass Run Road/Mifflin Road)
• Northbound Route 837 ramp to northbound Route 885 (Glenwood Bridge)
• Northbound Route 885 ramp to southbound Route 837 (Homestead)

Traffic from northbound Route 837 will be able to access Route 885 in both directions via the new temporary intersection.  Also, traffic from northbound Route 885 will access southbound Route 837 at the new intersection.

Traffic from northbound Route 837 to East Carson Street will be detoured.

Work on the project will be suspended in October 2016, the PennDOT spokesman said. A winter hiatus will occur from November, 2016 through mid-February, 2017 before the next portion of the project resumes.

. . .

As for the work on Second Avenue near its intersection with Greenfield Avenue, a spokesman for Pittsburgh Mayor Bill Peduto said the four-day closure is necessary so that utility crews can dig up the street and repair underground lines as well as manholes.

The work, being done by Independence Excavating, is not related to the Glenwood Bridge interchange project.

That means that cars will not be able to get from Hazelwood to downtown Pittsburgh using Second Avenue, at least until Feb. 23. The detour will take motorists onto East Carson Street.
