McKeesport officials are warning motorists not to park on sidewalks.
At Wednesday’s meeting, City Councilman Jim Barry Jr. urged Mayor Michael Cherepko to take action against the practice.
“I’m getting some constituent complaints,” he said. “I notice it mostly on Walnut Street and Fifth Avenue, but it’s starting to move into (residential) neighborhoods as well.”
Barry described the problem as more than a nuisance. “It forces people to walk in the street, so it’s a safety issue, but it’s busting up the sidewalks and curbs,” he said. “We’ve got to start warning people.”
Cherepko said city police are “not warning people any more,” they’re issuing citations. “You’ve got people who are literally parking under signs that say ‘no parking on the sidewalk,’” Cherepko said. “In some neighborhoods, it’s becoming a real problem.”
Parking on sidewalks causes a particular problem for people who use wheelchairs or mobility scooters to get around, Cherepko said. With the end of the school year, police will have more time this summer to enforce parking regulations, he said.

Cherepko said that with the relaxing of COVID-19 pandemic restrictions on crowds, the city’s summer concert series is expected to resume July 4 weekend.
Other upcoming events include the fishing derby at Lake Emilie in Renziehausen Park on June 12, Good Neighbor Day on Fifth Avenue, Downtown, on June 16, and the Greater Pittsburgh Soap Box Derby on Eden Park Boulevard on June 20.
After a one-year absence due to the pandemic, International Village will return Aug. 10–12 in Renzie.
And presuming COVID-19 numbers continue to stay low, the city expects to hold several events in Renzie over Labor Day weekend, Cherepko said. “We’ve got a big weekend planned for Labor Day,” he said.
