Slow-roasted lamb sandwiches and haddock filets will both be on the menu when “A Taste of Serbia” returns to St. Sava Serbian Orthodox Church.

A spokeswoman said pre-orders will be taken Sept. 12 to 26. The event will be held 3 to 7 p.m. Oct. 1 and 12 noon to 7 p.m. Oct. 2.

The church is located at 901 Hartman St. in McKeesport. Limited outdoor seating will be available in the courtyard and in addition to pre-orders, walk-up orders will be taken both days while supplies last.

Fish sandwiches and pierogies are available on Friday only, while lamb sandwiches top the menu both days. New this year are cevaps, six grilled skinless meat sausages served with onions, a roll and kajmak spread. Burek, a savory meat and cheese pie in phyllo dough, pleases the discerning palette.

Stuffed cabbage rolls, traditional sauerkraut and red kidney bean soup, halushki, Serbian potato salad and Serbian coleslaw round out the main menu. Unlike mainstream salads prepared with creamy dressings, Serbian salads are mixed with an oil and vinegar dressing.

Sweet treats include apple strudel, palacinke, krofne, pineapple pita, kifle, and a bakery sampler. The St. Sava Sundae mounds two scoops of vanilla ice cream with warm apple strudel topping. And, yes, the Church Ladies’ nut rolls and apricot rolls are back.

To place a pre-order with a credit card, call (412) 469-2955 or visit the church’s website, www.stsavapa.org. Cash or credit cards are accepted for walk-up orders.

COVID-19 safety guidelines and restrictions will be followed and persons who do not wear a face mask over their mouth and nose will not be served, the spokeswoman said.
