It “probably the worst-kept secret in the world,” joked North Versailles Twp. Commissioner Allen Wagner at this week's meeting.

Township commissioners reacted to the news — finally confirmed this month — that Internet shopping giant Amazon.com is building a distribution center at the site of the former Eastland Mall.

At the October meeting, board members confirmed the recent sale of the former Eastland Mall property to Amazon.com.

The Pittsburgh Business Times first reported on Oct. 14 that the 46-acre property at 2900 Maryland Ave. is being sold by Realty Development Eastland Inc. — an affiliate of Buffalo, N.Y., shopping mall owner Benderson Development LLC — for $9 million.

Wagner said the Amazon distribution center is expected to create 500 jobs in the township. The facility will also have an office for residents to pick up packages if they do not want them delivered to their home. Contractors began working at the Maryland Avenue site at the end of August.

Wagner also teased other possible development in North Versailles saying there are interested parties in two vacant lots — one at the former Longview driving range behind Rossi’s Flea Market and the other on Nazer Road off of Route 30.

In other business, Big’s Sanitation was awarded a five-year contract beginning on January 1, 2022 to continue handling the township's garbage removal.

Commission President Frank Bivins was recognized for 36 years of service on the township board. Bivins received a framed certificate from the Pennsylvania State Association of Township Commissioners presented by Commissioner George Thompson.

Commissioners authorized payments from the 2021 Fire Tax Money to West Wilmerding VFC in the amount of $2,692.08 and to Crestas VFC in the amount of $18,145.99; and released $41,100.11 in 2021 Volunteer Fire Relief Money to the Volunteer Fire Relief Association. The VFRA provides financial relief in the event a volunteer firefighter is hurt as a result of participating in fire service.
