An Irwin man has been charged by Allegheny County police in connection with a fatal shooting last week in North Versailles Twp.
Court officials said that Samuel Trusso, 40, is awaiting formal arraignment in Allegheny County Court on charges of criminal homicide and dischargining a firearm into an occupied structure.
Allegheny County police have accused Trusso of shooting and fatally wounding 38-year-old Travis G. Sanner of North Versailles during an argument March 22 at a home just off of Crooked Run Road. Police said Trusso fled when officers arrived, then turned the gun on himself and shot himself in the head.
Trusso was taken to a hospital in Monroeville and is expected to survive, officials said.
According to a criminal complaint, township police were dispatched to a home in the 500 block of Rustic Road for a report of a shooting. There, they found Sanner lying just inside the front door, with an apparent gunshot wound.
Sanner was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the medical examiner’s office.
As police began searching the area, the complaint states, a man later identified as Trusso was spotted fleeing the scene with a firearm in his hand. According to the complaint, as police approached, Trusso pointed the gun at his own head and fired once.
Witnesses told police that earlier in the evening, Trusso had visited the home of his estranged wife and had gotten into an argument and a physical altercation with Sanner, according to the complaint.
A short time later, police allege, Trusso and his estranged wife visited Sanner’s home on Rustic Road to collect some of her belongings. According to the complaint, witnesses said Trusso and Sanner again argued, and that when Sanner slammed the door closed on Trusso, Trusso produced a handgun and fired several shots through the door.
Police recovered three spent 9 mm shell casings at the scene, according to the complaint. One of the bullet holes in the door showed evidence that it was fired at close range, police said.
County police said a 9 mm pistol was recovered when Trusso was taken into custody, according to the complaint.
Trusso was alert and able to speak to medical personnel at the hospital, police said.
