A Duquesne police officer received a gunshot wound early Wednesday morning following an altercation in the 600 block of Catherine Street, emergency personnel said.

Allegheny County homicide detectives are investigating.

The incident happened less than three weeks after two McKeesport police officers were shot, one fatally, while attempting to obtain mental-health treatment for a Wilson Street man.

The unidentified Duquesne officer, who was taken to a hospital in stable condition, was wounded in the foot but returned fire, Allegheny County police Lt. Venerando Costa said in a prepared statement.

The suspect also was injured and was taken to a hospital, police said.

Costa said police were dispatched just after midnight when callers reported hearing gunshots. A Duquesne police officer arrived on the scene and immediately was fired upon before exiting his patrol car, Costa said.

The officer returned fire, striking the suspect in the leg, county police said.

The suspect attempted to hide in the basement of an abandoned house as additional police from Duquesne, West Mifflin and other agencies responded to the scene, according to reports.

Officers took the suspect into custody without further incident, Costa said.

Homicide detectives initiated an investigation and identified the suspect as Shyheim C. Berry, 28, of Duquesne. He is charged by county police with attempted homicide of a law-enforcement officer, aggravated assault on a law-enforcement officer, aggravated assault, criminal trespass and terroristic threats.

Berry is currently under guard at a hospital pending preliminary arraignment, police said.

Court records indicate that although Berry does have a criminal record, all of the charges until now were for summary offenses such as public drunkenness and disorderly conduct.

Anyone with information concerning this incident is asked to call the Allegheny County police tip line at 1-833-ALL-TIPS (1-833-255-8477); callers can remain anonymous. The department can also be reached via its social media sites.
