Three Local High Schools Top Band Competition

East Allegheny, McKeesport Area, Serra Catholic all take honors

Lots of clouds are fitting for the “Up in the Air” theme of McKeesport Area High School Tiger Band’s 2023 show. After taking first place in its category at regionals on Oct. 21 at Penn-Trafford High School, the band is looking forward to performing on their home field for the state competition on Saturday (Oct. 28). Three local high school marching bands were named regional champions in their respective categories at the Tournament of Bands Region 8 competition Oct. 21 at Penn-Trafford High School Warrior Stadium.

East Allegheny, McKeesport Area and Serra Catholic received top scores for their performances, as reported by Tournament of Bands Region 8.

East Allegheny

East Allegheny performed a selection of songs by the Four Seasons in their “Jersey Boys” show, which scored 90.08 in Group 2-A. That score included high auxiliary, percussion, plus music and visuals.

The band is under the direction of Justin Rosco, with head drum major Daniel Cipcic and color guard captain Mercedes Hanko. Color guard and visual director is Lee Kumer, and David Cornelius designed the drills.

McKeesport Area



McKeesport Area scored 90.60 in Group 2-0 (open) for “Up in the Air,” under the direction of Drew DeCarlo and drill designer Ryan Raible. Senior drum major is Tina Wos, with Cooper Kuchma the junior field commander.
McKeesport Area won the high music and high visual award as well as getting top score in their division. Color guard is directed by Tori Palermo. Sydney Campusano and Savia Kawlaski are color guard captains.

Serra Catholic



Serra Catholic scored 86.42 in Group 1-A competition, including high percussion, visuals, and music. Drum major Vincent Brown received one of several Performer-of-the-Week awards for the many roles and instruments he plays in the Western-themed show “Wanted.”

The band is under the direction of Jesse Bush, with the drill designed by Ryan Raible. Susan Frank is the color guard director, with color guard co-captains Francesca Aland and Katelyn Kostrub.
