Thursday’s storms were another record-setting day for the Pittsburgh area.

The National Weather Service in Moon Twp. said that 2.77 inches of rain measured at Pittsburgh International Airport nearly doubled the previous record for April 11, set in 1933.

It also was the 25th-wettest day on record in Pittsburgh, NWS forecasters said. Records go back to 1871.

So far, April’s rainfall has been 6.11 inches above normal and the month is now the third-wettest April on record, the weather services said Friday. By month’s end, April 2024 will probably be the wettest April in Pittsburgh, ever.

State Department of Transportation officials said Friday morning that dozens of roads remain closed due to flooding, including in the Mon-Yough area:

• Route 48 at Ripple Road in White Oak – Closed

• Route 837 (Kennywood Boulevard) between Mifflin Street and Glenn Street in West Mifflin – Lane Restriction

• Route 837 (Duquesne Road) under the McKeesport-Duquesne Bridge — Closed

• Bunola River Road between Cliff Mill Drive and Elkhorn Road in Forward Twp. – Closed

• Streets Run Road between Glass Run Road and Brentwood Road in Pittsburgh — Closed

More trouble is in store, according to the National Weather Service. High winds will move through the area today and tomorrow. Due to the ground being heavily soaked by rain, that brings the risk of falling trees, according to forecasters.

A wind advisory has been issued through 7 a.m. Saturday. Winds could gust to 30 or 40 mph, forecasters said.

Rivers continue to rise. At 11 a.m. Friday, the Monongahela River at Elizabeth was at 17 feet. The river is expected to crest on Friday afternoon near 18 feet, or roughly two feet below flood stage.

The Youghiogheny River is expected to crest Saturday morning below flood stage.
