After a historic run, members of the McKeesport Area High School girls basketball team were honored at Thursday’s school board meeting. Several senior players were presented certificates and basketballs in recognition of their achievements.

“This team has accomplished many historical moments and it has been exciting to be a spectator of their journey over the last four years,” MASD Superintendent Tia Wanzo said.

Board member Jason Pavlecic agreed: “This is a special group of young athletes.”

During the past four years the Lady Tigers have amassed an 86-22 record, gone 37-8 in sectional games, and finished 18-7 in the playoffs.

The team has made the WPIAL semifinals in each of the last three years, and PIAA semifinals twice.

“This was all done under three different head coaches over their high school careers,” Pavlecic said. “This makes them the all-time winningest class in girls basketball history.”

Apart from being recognized as a team, and as a senior class, individual players were highlighted.

Madison Hertzler was honored for making the most three-pointers in a career: 106.

Brooke Evans was recognized for setting a new school record of 482 career assists.

Rachael Manfredo was congratulated for becoming the 9th girl in school history to reach 1,000 career points; her total points scored places her fifth overall for girls.

Pavlecic told attendees the athletes’ feats extend beyond basketball. “You’ve brought McKeesport together,” he said. “Thank you for not only being leaders on the court but also in the school and in the community.”

“It was an honor to see you guys get to grow up over the last four years,” he added.

“The way they play and the way they conduct themselves is absolutely amazing,” board president Mark Holtzman Sr. said.

For years, Holtzman has refereed regional basketball games. “The last thing I say to teams is if you’re going to drive to the hole, buckle up,” he said. “These ladies buckled up and did everything they did to get where they are, and I couldn’t be prouder of them.”
