State Rep. Matt Gergely has been hospitalized for what was described as a “medical emergency” by a spokesperson for the state House Democratic Caucus. Few other details were released.

The McKeesport Democrat won a special election in 2023 to fill the 35th District seat, which was left vacant when former state Rep. Austin Davis of McKeesport was elected lieutenant governor.

In November, Gergely was elected to a full two-year term. His illness was first reported Friday by Pittsburgh public radio station WESA-FM.

In a statement released Friday night, Elizabeth Rementer, press secretary to House Majority Leader Matt Bradford, said, “Rep. Matt Gergely had a medical emergency over the holidays requiring hospitalization. We are all thinking of Matt and his family as he recovers.”

No further details were available.

A text message and an email sent to Gergely’s office by Tube City Almanac on Friday were not immediately returned.

Gergely, 45, and his wife, Holly, have two children. The 35th District includes the city, Clairton, Duquesne, Homestead, Liberty, Lincoln, Munhall, Port Vue, South Versailles Twp., Versailles, West Homestead, White Oak and parts of West Mifflin.

State representatives are scheduled to be sworn into office for the 2025-2026 legislative session on Tuesday.

WESA said that Gergely’s illness calls into question whether the state House of Representatives will be able to elect a speaker of the house next week. Democrats hold a one-vote majority in the 203-seat chamber. If Gergely or any other representative is absent, both parties would be tied at 101 votes each.

The radio station reported that members may designate their party’s whip to cast a vote for speaker in their absence.
