Residents of McKeesport and surrounding communities that get water service from the Municipal Authority of Westmoreland County are being asked to conserve after a period of high demand.

Matthew Junker, authority spokesman, said that extremely cold temperatures caused many residents to run their water to prevent frozen lines.

At the same time, the water authority was responding to a number of leaks and water line breaks caused by the weather, he said. Due to rising temperatures, customers no longer need to let their water run, he said.

In order to bring system levels back up, Junker said, the authority is asking customers to reduce water usage at their homes and businesses until the system can stabilize.

MAWC will notify more than 121,000 customers by telephone, asking them to reduce their usage and to report known or suspected leaks, Junker said.

Customers in McKeesport, Duquesne, Forward Twp., Port Vue, South Versailles Twp., Versailles and White Oak are affected, along with those residents of Monroeville, North Versailles Twp., Wall and West Newton who get their water from MAWC.

“We’re looking and listening for leaks, but while we are working on this, we need our customers to help out by conserving and reporting any leaks known or suspected leak,” said MAWC Resident Manager Michael F. Kukura.

Customers whose water is provided by Pennsylvania American Water Co. are not affected.

The conservation order affects almost all of the MAWC system except for customers in Ligonier, Westmoreland County, Junker said.

To report a leak, call (724) 755-5800 or email help@mawc.org.
