McKeesport Area School District will vote to approve several expenses and fiscal measures during next Thursday’s regular board meeting.
On Feb. 13, school directors will decide whether to authorize the district to receive quotes and award work to repair two hot water circulation pumps at the high school for a cost not to exceed $19,500 per pump, according to President Mark Holtzman Sr.
School director Jason Pavlecic said the work is “much needed to continue the heat in the building.” In lieu of replacing faulty pumps, pursuing repairs at a total cost not to exceed $39,000, will save the district a “significant amount of money,” Pavlecic added during a Feb. 6 open agenda meeting.
Also on the agenda for next Thursday’s meeting is a vote to approve the D.A.R.E. (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) Program for the 2024-2025 school year at a cost not exceeding $9,000.
D.A.R.E., which has operated in the district for nearly 20 years, was previously supported by grant money. That funding is no longer available, however, the district recognizes the “importance of having the drug resistance education, and we were able to find some funds in the general fund to support that,” Assistant Superintendent Matthew Mols said.
If approved, the program will be available for fifth grade students at Francis McClure and Twin Rivers elementary schools.
Along with voting to approve funding chaperones and security for the 2025 prom in the amount of $5,000, school directors will determine whether to approve a capital transfer of $3 million from the unassigned fund balance to the capital reserve account next Thursday.
School directors approved a transfer last March of $2 million to the capital reserve account. Money from the account was used to cover expenses including stadium lighting, paving around the high school, and sound and lighting improvements at the high school auditorium.
