Auberle will host the second of two meetings this week to discuss disbursements from a health and welfare fund created in the wake of a 2018 air-pollution incident.

A public hearing will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. today (Feb. 20) at 1101 Hartman St., McKeesport (register now) to hear community input into the Mon Valley Public Health and Welfare Fund.

The fund was created as part of the settlement from the 2018 fire at the U.S. Steel Clairton Plant.

On Tuesday, Allegheny County held a virtual town hall meeting regarding the fund. Six projects have been awarded money so far, officials said.

The second round of applications for funding opens on March 24, and it will run for approximately two months, closing right before Memorial Day.

This year’s allocation will be $450,000, but applicants have been advised to be realistic in their requests.

“Since the annual allocation is $450,000 a year, it's not all going to go to one project or one program, most likely,” said Nathan Wetzel, manager of the Housing Division of Allegheny County Economic Development. “Scale the program so it's feasible and doable for a reasonable amount of funds.”

Jennifer Kwiatek, government grants coordinator for the Steel Rivers Council of Governments, was present at the event and expressed enthusiasm about using the funds for the Duquesne area.

To qualify, applicants must be nonprofit 501(c)(3) organizations that use the funds in the communities of Braddock, Clairton, Dravosburg, Duquesne, McKeesport, East McKeesport, East Pittsburgh, Elizabeth Borough, Elizabeth Twp., West Elizabeth, Liberty, Lincoln, North Braddock, Versailles, North Versailles, Pleasant Hills, Port Vue, Wall, and West Mifflin.

Community members are also encouraged to provide input through the U.S. Steel Settlement Community Survey.
