A new state report (PDF download) details widespread underage drinking --- including binge drinking --- across Pennsylvania.

For instance: About 75 percent of Allegheny County 10th graders report drinking an alcoholic beverage --- meaning more than just a "sip" --- in the past 30 days.

With prom season and graduation parties approaching, we wanted to know: What are some strategies to spot and stop underage drinking? And why is underage drinking a problem that we should take seriously?

Last week, we talked to Bethany Gardner, state director of the Bureau of Alcohol Education at the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board, and Ken Healey, alcohol education outreach coordinator for the PLCB for the western region of Pennsylvania.

How is the PLCB trying to reduce and prevent underage drinking through in-school educational programs? And what steps can parents and teachers take to prevent or reduce underage drinking?
