Republican candidate Chuck Davis congratulated his Democratic rival and expressed his hopes for the future of the 35th District.

Unofficial results from the Allegheny County Elections Division on Wednesday showed Davis trailing Dan Goughnour by 6,797 to 3,751 votes in Tuesday’s special election, with one precinct in Duquesne still untabulated. Davis ran strong in his native White Oak, where he serves as borough council president, with 1,054 votes to Goughnour’s 1,082.

Returns elsewhere showed Goughnour with sizable margins in most of the rest of the district, which includes Clairton, Duquesne, McKeesport, Munhall and Port Vue.

Davis was not available by phone Wednesday, but in a statement posted on social media, he expressed his hope that “Goughnour will be a champion for our communities and a voice for the people across the Mon Valley.”

“Running for office is never easy, and I commend Dan and his team for their hard work and commitment throughout this race,” Davis wrote. “While the outcome wasn’t what we hoped for, I remain hopeful for the future of HD-35. This district is filled with strong, resilient people who deserve real attention to the issues that matter most — public safety, economic growth and lower taxes.”

Davis also thanked his supporters and volunteersm saying “your passion, time, and belief in a better future meant everything. This isn’t the end — just another step forward.”
