A city man injured March 8 during an arrest by McKeesport police was trying to hit another man with a brick, a criminal complaint alleges.
Callie Stinson Sr., 72, is charged by McKeesport police with two counts of simple assault and one count of resisting arrest in connection with the incident. He faces a preliminary hearing April 28 before Magisterial District Justice Eugene Riazzi.
Stinson’s family has alleged that police used excessive force in arresting Stinson, causing broken ribs and contusions on his face and neck. Stinson has a tracheotomy tube to assist his breathing, they said. A video of Stinson’s arrest, recorded by a bystander, was widely shared on social media last month.
According to the criminal complaint, police were dispatched March 8 to the 1800 block of Beech Street for a disturbance. When they arrived, police allege, Stinson was throwing punches at another man.
Police said that Stinson was knocked to the ground using a so-called “leg sweep” maneuver, and that officers then attempted to handcuff him. The complaint alleges that Stinson hid one hand under his body and attempted to get up.
Police said that officers restrained Stinson and forcibly handcuffed him. Officers then called paramedics to the scene and Stinson was taken to UPMC McKeesport hospital, according to the complaint.
The victim told police that he and Stinson were in an argument when Stinson picked up a brick and tried to throw it at him, accoring to the report.
The video posted on social media appears to show a large, heavy object — possibly a brick — being tossed to the side by police after Stinson is handcuffed.
