McKeesport Area School Board is seeking applications from residents of the community to replace School Director Dan Goughnour, who has resigned.

Goughnor’s resignation was accepted by the board at last week’s meeting. He won the special election to the state General Assembly and was sworn into office on April 7.

During the April 10 meeting, school district Solicitor Gary Matta said the school board has 30 days to appoint a replacement for Goughnour.

“If the board does not do that within the 30-day time period, anyone from the community could petition the court of Common Pleas in Allegheny County to set a hearing to appoint a new board member,” Matta said.

According to the Pennsylvania School Boards Association, to be eligible to serve on a school board, prospective directors must be citizens of Pennsylvania, of “good moral character,” at least 18 years old, and a resident of the the district for at least one year prior to election or appointment. In addition to the city, the McKeesport Area school district also includes Dravosburg, South Versailles Twp., Versailles and White Oak.

State law prohibits anyone employed by the school district from serving on the board of that same school district, and the courts have ruled that persons convicted of felonies or various misdemeanors are barred from office under the Pennsylvania Constitution.

At last week’s meeting, School Board President Mark Holtzman Sr. informed attendees that “anyone that’s interested in being on the school board, please, by all means, put a letter of interest and send it to our board secretary, Shelley (Fawcett), and the board will then review those and whatever else we do, and then we’ll make a decision.

Matta asked that letters to Fawcett be sent no later than April 30.
