Nine candidates for McKeesport Area School District’s school board will debate Tuesday night in the high school auditorium, a district spokeswoman announced.
The debate, at 7 p.m. April 29, is being organized by political science teacher Gerald McGrew and his honors political science class. The public is welcome to attend and the debate also will be streamed on the district’s YouTube channel, the spokeswoman said.
“The class has been working on preparing questions and candidate bios from the information received in class,” McGrew said in a release. “The debate will be run very professionally by the students most of whom are juniors, but we do have a couple of seniors in the class as well.”
A timed agenda will keep the students on track as they host the candidates’ debate for voters in the upcoming May 20 primary election.
Four seats are up for election this year on the McKeesport Area School Board. Incumbents David Donato and Matthew Holtzman are running for re-election.
Two seats are open — School Director LaToya Wright is not running again, while Dan Goughnour resigned after being elected state representative for the 35th Legislative District.
In addition to Holtzman and Donato, other announced candidates include Bob Boyle, Tom Filotei, Kevin Kovach, Arla Payne, Mike Shelly, Julian Thomas, and Tiffany Wampler. School director races are officially non-partisan and all nine candidates have filed for both the Republican and Democratic nominations.
McGrew said each candidate will be allowed to give a timed opening and closing statement. Time also will be kept on each of the questions answered.
Topics expected to be raised include how the potential candidates would like to oversee and run the district and approve budgets.
