City Plans Range of Spring, Summer Events

Calendar includes Renzie Market, youth clinics, concerts

With the arrival of warm weather, spring and summer activities are ramping up in the McKeesport community, and the calendar is packed, volunteers and organizers said:

Renzie Market: The Renzie Market begins regular operations this week (May 15) and will continue on the first and third Thursday of each month through the summer. Hours are 5:30 to 8 p.m. and admission is free.

Residents can browse fresh produce and food trucks and enjoy live entertainment. The marketplace will take place at the Tulip Drive lot behind the No. 2 fire station in Renziehausen Park.

Literacy Lunch with Bluey: On May 17, the AIU McKeesport Family Center, McKeesport SHIP and the City of McKeesport will host a Literacy Lunch with Bluey. Attendants will enjoy stories and music, and snacks will be available. Each child will receive a free book to take home. To register, call the McKeesport Family Center at 412-672-6970. This event will take place between 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the  akomas Blue-Top Pavilion in Renzie.

Youth Tennis Clinic: If your child has an interest in tennis, check out the Youth Tennis Clinic on May 17 at the Renzie Park Tennis Courts. Experts Paul Heatherington, Vladimir Kovalchuk and Emmet Chesleigh will host. Hours are 10 a.m.  to 12 noon.

Memorial Day: The City of McKeesport will honor those veterans who made the ultimate sacrifice with a solemn ceremony at Memorial Park on Lysle Boulevard, at 10 a.m. May 26.

Summer Concert Series: This year’s Summer Concert Series at Renziehausen Park begins on June 8 with a performance sponsored by the Carnegie Library of McKeesport, McKeesport Music Club, City of McKeesport and McKeesport Lions Club. No Bad Juju will perform at the Lions Bandshell at Eden Park Blvd and Tulip Drive. Show starts at 7 p.m. and admission is free.

Good Neighbor Day: The 61st annual Good Neighbor Day will take place on June 11 along Fifth Avenue, Downtown. This street festival, which runs between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. will feature games and food trucks.

A Fishing Derby for Kids: A Fishing Derby for kids will happen on June 14 at Lake Emilie (Eden Park Boulevard at Tulip Drive, Renziehausen Park). Prizes and lunch are available and registration is free. Time is 8 a.m. to 12 noon.

Community Day: McKeesport’s 5th Annual Community Day is happening on June 14 between 12 noon and  4 p.m. Come to 500 Market St. for food, live entertainment, children’s activities, raffles and more. There’s even an opportunity to enter the talent show with a chance to win cash prizes. Deadline to audition is May 30. For more information, email cynthiajmartin7@gmail.com or call (412) 664-6774.

Games and Crafts: On June 20, the McKeesport Recreation Board invites families to play games, participate in athletic activities, and do crafts at the Lions Bandshell between 7:30 and 9 p.m. A movie in the park will follow.

Juneteenth Kickball Tournament: In honor of Juneteenth, a “stop the violence” kickball tournament will take place at Renziehausen Park between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. June 21. Sponsored by Allen Come Get Wright, Mayor Mike Cherepko and the City of McKeesport, the tournament will include vendors, entertainment and a picnic. Baseball Clinic: Another free event for youth is happening on June 28 at Jimmy Long Field in Renziehausen Park. Between the hours of 9 a.m. and 12 noon, former Major League baseball players will teach kids ages 6 to 16 the fundamentals of the game. Participants are asked to bring a bat, glove, water and sneakers. Visit www.mckeesport-pa.gov for more details and events.
