An unindentified man was in critical condition Tuesday morning following a shooting outside of UPMC McKeesport hospital, Allegheny County police said.

Detectives said the incident occurred after the victim attempted to force his way into a car in the parking lot and that there was no danger to the general public.

The emergency room was closed temporarily following the incident and a clinic inside the hospital was closed after sustaining damage, a UPMC spokesperson said.

In a prepared release, county police said the incident began just after 3 a.m. when the shooting victim attempted to force his way into someone’s car outside of the hospital.

During the altercation, shots were fired and one of the people involved was wounded, emergency officials said.

Allegheny County detectives said a UPMC Police officer also fired several shots, but as of Tuesday morning, it did not appear that anyone was struck by the officer’s gunfire. The incident remains under investigation, county police said.

County police said that “all individuals involved are accounted for and there is no danger to the public.”

Anyone with information concerning this incident is asked to call the county police tip line at 1-833-ALL-TIPS. Callers may remain anonymous.

In a prepared release, a UPMC spokesperson said: “An incident involving two individuals occurred outside the Emergency Department at UPMC McKeesport. The incident escalated with shots fired and one of the individuals involved struck. UPMC Police in the (Emergency Department) responded swiftly to help contain the incident to the parking lot, aiding local police in apprehending the individual responsible. No one else was injured.”

Magee-Womens Specialty Services inside the hospital sustained damage and was closed Tuesday. A UPMC spokesperson said patients were being contacted by the hospital to reschedule their appointments.
