A Monroeville teen-ager who is charged with stealing $108,000 worth of merchandise in the burglary of a North Versailles Twp. vape shop bragged about the crime to his friends in chat messages, police said.
Police allege that Sean D. Stitt, 19, of Monroeville took pictures following the burglary and sent them to friends, saying, “gonna be lit ... look at all the weed.”
Stitt is being held in Allegheny County Jail in lieu of bond after being charged by township police with burglary, criminal trespass, criminal mischief, theft by unlawful taking and receiving stolen property. He faces a preliminary hearing Oct. 30 before Magisterial District Judge Roxanne Sakoian Eichler.
He also faces additional charges in McKeesport, Monroeville and Moon Twp., court documents indicate.
Police have accused Stitt of smashing a stolen car into the front doors of Exotic Blvd. Smoke & Vape Shop early on the morning of Aug. 5 and grabbing almost $54,000 in rolling supplies, cannabis, glass pipes, vaping supplies and other merchandise, and another $46,000 in synthetic cannabis, before fleeing the scene.
Court documents indicate that the investigation leading to Stitt’s arrest involved multiple police departments who connected him to several different incidents.
According to an affidavit of probable cause, township police were called to the vape shop on Walmart Drive just after 2:30 a.m. Aug. 5 for a report of a burglary in progress.
Police arrived to find the glass storefront smashed and the burglar gone. The owner told police no cash was taken, but that a substantial amount of merchandise was missing, the complaint states.
The complaint states that a suspect had come to the store one day earlier and asked the owners questions about the business. At least $5,000 damage was done to the storefront, according to the complaint.
Police obtained survelliance video of that suspect, as well as additional footage that showed a 2016 Hyundai Santa Fe at the scene of the burglary on Aug. 5. According to the complaint, the vehicle had been reported stolen July 22 from the East End of Pittsburgh.
Several hours later on Aug. 5, McKeesport police found the stolen vehicle in the 900 block of Grant Street, near Jenny Lind Street.
Police said the car was impounded and examined by Allegheny County crime lab technicians, who obtained forensic evidence from the vehicle.
According to a criminal complaint, another Hyundai was stolen from Moon Twp. on Aug. 20. McKeesport police stopped that vehicle and detained the driver, identified as Stitt, who was arrested and charged with receiving stolen property.
Moon Twp. police then obtained a search warrant for Stitt’s phone, which according to the complaint contained photos of Stitt posing with what appeared to be several stolen vehicles, as well as photos taken inside the Exotic Blvd. vape shop at the time of the burglary.
Police allege that messages sent from Stitt’s account indicated that he began planning the burglary at Exotic Blvd. several days before.
On Aug. 2, police said in the complaint, Stitt texted a friend, “I got us a easy lick. Literally nobody is even around this place. Easy money.”
According to the complaint, Monroeville police obtained a search warrant for Stitt’s apartment and on Sept. 4 recovered a large amount of suspected marijuana and a large number of cigars as well as vapes and vape supplies that were identified as having been stolen from Exotic Blvd.
Police also subpoenaed Stitt’s Internet search history and found that he had searched for TV news coverage about the Aug. 5 burglary at Exotic Blvd., according to the complaint.
Court records indicate that Stitt also faces charges filed by Pitcairn police of theft by unlawful taking, receiving stolen property, loitering and prowling at night and criminal mischief in connection with an Aug. 18 incident in that borough; as well as charges from Monroeville police of receiving stolen property, possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia related to the Sept. 4 search; and charges of theft by unlawful taking, criminal mischief and loitering and prowling at night from Moon Twp. police related to the Aug. 20 theft of a motor vehicle.
Stitt waived his right to preliminary hearings on the McKeesport, Monroeville and Moon Twp. charges, according to court records. A hearing on the Pitcairn charges is scheduled for Oct. 30 before Eichler.
