A city man faces drug charges and moving violations following a police chase in North Versailles Twp.

Da’Mon L. Dreher Jr., 21, of McKeesport is being held in the Allegheny County Jail in lieu of bond pending a hearing Thursday before Magisterial District Judge Roxanne Sakoian Eichler.

Court records indicate that at the time of his arrest, Dreher was on probation for a previous conviction on a weapons offense.

According to a criminal complaint, a North Versailles officer was on routine patrol just before 11 a.m. Nov. 6 when his police car was nearly struck head-on by another vehicle on East Pittsburgh-McKeesport Boulevard near Westinghouse Avenue.

The complaint states the police officer turned his vehicle around and attempted to pursue the other car, but that it failed to stop and he lost sight of the other driver at the crest of a hill.

A few minutes later, according to the complaint, the owner of a business near the intersection of East Pittsburgh-McKeesport Boulevard and Navy-Marine Corps Way called township police to report that a suspicious vehicle had just been abandoned in his parking lot, and that the driver had fled on foot.

Township police responded to the bsiness and found the vehicle was still running, with the windshield wipers activated, but it had severe damage to the left front wheel and suspension. Police said a container labeled “marijuana” was visible on the front seat, and that police requested a search warrant and a tow truck.

While waiting for a detective to arrive, police said, a suspect later identified as Dreher approached on foot and told officers at the scene that the damaged vehicle was his, and that he “needed to check on it.” Police asked Dreher if he was the driver of the vehicle when it had nearly collided with the patrol car, according to the affidavit, and Dreher told police “I was being chased.”

Police took Dreher into custody. According to the affidavit, no other vehicles were in the area or appeared to be chasing Dreher’s car at the time of the incident.

The affidavit states that police obtained surveillance video footage of Dreher’s car striking a concrete lane divider at the intersection of Navy-Marine Corps Way. The video then shows Dreher abandoning the car in the parking lot and then fleeing on foot, according to police.

Police said a subsequent search of the vehicle turned up suspected marijuana, clear plastic bags, a digital scale with marijuana residue on it, and cash, according to the complaint.

Dreher is charged by township police with drug possession, possession with intent to deliver, possession of drug paraphernalia, fleeing and eluding police, driving outside of traffic lanes, reckless driving, driving at unsafe speeds and driving on the wrong side of the road.
