McKeesport Area School District is looking to improve conditions on campus by spending nearly $850,000 on high school and stadium repairs.

The school board is expected to vote on a proposal at a meeting Thursday (Dec. 11). School directors spent the Dec. 4 open agenda meeting describing the projects’ merits.

Costs, according to district materials, include a facilities assessment and turf replacement.

“We all kind of recognize that our high school needs some upgrades,” MASD President David Seropian said. “Doing the feasibility study is the first step.”

The study, which will be conducted by Draw Collective Architecture, is set to cost no more than $36,800 and paid out of the district’s capital improvement fund.

School Director Jason Pavlecic noted the $36,800 sum is a “reimbursable cost” if the study moves toward a project and renovation. Regarding the turf replacement, Seropian said the current field has “some safety issues” and “it’s time” to address the matter.

The bid to replace the stadium’s artificial turf surface with Vertex-Core 2.25 inch turf is set to cost the district no more than $821,576.15. Expenses, according to district materials, will be paid out by the district’s capital improvement fund.

Pavlecic noted the cost will be offset by a $250,000 grant MASD received from the Tull Family Foundation.

Created by Thomas and Alba Tull, the foundation recently announced grants totaling $2 million supporting high school athletics at nine Allegheny County school districts, including MASD.

The new turf, according to Scott Smith, MASD’s director of buildings and grounds, could last between 11-14 years depending on usage. Included within the bid, Smith added, is a “sweep machine,” which allows the district to maintain the field, and 10 years of “annual grooming.” Both measures will “help protect the student athletes for a much longer period of time.”
