A 13-year-old boy from Wilmerding died Saturday after being struck by a car in West Mifflin, East Allegheny School District officials said.

Terrel “T.J.” Byars Jr. was a sixth-grade student at Logan Elementary School in North Versailles Twp., the district said in a prepared release.

West Mifflin police said Route 837 near Kennywood was closed just after 5 p.m. Saturday due to a “vehicle accident” but had released no other information on Sunday. The road reopened about four hours later.

Tube City Almanac has reached out to West Mifflin officials for more information.

A report from the Allegheny County medical examiner’s office was not available.

In a prepared release, the school district called Byars’ death an “unimaginable loss” and said grief counselors would be available for students, faculty and staff affected by the incident.

“Our thoughts are with the student’s family, friends, classmates and teachers during this difficult time,” the district said. “We understand that this news will affect many members of our school community, and we are here to support you.”

Counselors from Turtle Creek Valley Community Service will be available at Logan Elementary Monday and Tuesday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. for grief support, the district said.

Additional counseling services will be available when school resumes on Jan. 5, the district said, adding, “We ask that our community keep the family in your thoughts and respect their privacy as we support one another.”
